Abstract

Community service activities is a form of implementation of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education which aims to support the improvement of the quality of education in the community. One of the activities carried out is mentoring Indonesian language learning through writing Observation Report Texts (TLHO) for students in grades IV and V of MIM Nurul Islam Tajinan. This activity aims to improve students' understanding and skills in compiling TLHOs by utilizing the school environment as a learning resource. The methods used include interactive lectures, direct observation, practice, and writing assistance. The implementation of the activity begins with providing material regarding the definition, purpose, structure, and steps for compiling TLHOs. Next, students conduct observations of the school environment to collect data which is then used as material for compiling observation reports. The results of the activity show that students have high enthusiasm during the learning process, actively make observations, and are able to compile observation report texts based on the data obtained. Utilizing the school environment as a learning medium provides a more contextual learning experience, thus helping students understand the material more easily and meaningfully. This mentoring activity shows that environment-based learning can be an effective alternative in improving elementary school students' writing skills, especially in compiling Observation Report Texts.

Abstract

Limited access to information about higher education, the need to strengthen practice-based learning, and the importance of preserving religious traditions were identified as several challenges in Sumbersuko Village, Tajinan District, Malang Regency. These conditions encouraged the implementation of the Community Service program, which aimed to develop literacy, practical skills, and socio-religious participation within the community. The methods employed included interactive lectures, group discussions, demonstrations or practical activities, and continuous mentoring. The program involved fourth- and fifth-grade students of MI Nurul Islam Tajinan and the residents of Sumbersuko Village. Activities included school environment observation and short story writing, mung bean sprout cultivation integrated with procedural text learning, higher education socialization through the New Student Admission (PMB) program, and education on preserving religious traditions through the takbir parade. The results showed improvements in students’ observation skills, report writing, creative writing abilities, and understanding of procedural texts through practical learning activities. Community members also gained broader knowledge about higher education and demonstrated active participation in preserving religious traditions. The program indicates that the utilization of local potential through educational, training, and outreach activities can contribute to improving human resource quality and strengthening socio-religious values within the community. In conclusion, the PMBP program had a positive impact on literacy development, practical skill enhancement, educational awareness, and socio-religious participation in Sumbersuko Village.
