Abstract

The Kenduri tradition is an annual cultural practice observed by the Javanese and Malay communities. This tradition embodies significant cultural and religious values. The purpose of this study is to analyze the Kenduri tradition in Asahan Regency from the perspective of Islamic communication philosophy by applying the theory of communication principles. This study employed a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through interviews and documentation. The findings reveal that the Kenduri tradition in Bumiharjo Village reflects Islamic communication values, particularly the principle of qaulan layyinan (gentle and respectful speech). The tradition is practiced in a polite and courteous manner, where community members respect and appreciate one another. In addition, the Kenduri tradition is conducted modestly and without extravagance. The implementation of this tradition is also aligned with Islamic religious norms and values. Furthermore, the Kenduri tradition is practiced honestly and fairly within the community in Asahan Regency. Based on the findings, the Kenduri tradition can serve as a medium for conveying Islamic messages to society. This tradition also contributes to increasing public awareness of Islamic values and fostering noble moral character within the community.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the discourse surrounding the government's handling of flood victims on TikTok. This research was descriptive qualitative, employing Robert N. Entman's framing analysis model. Data collection techniques included observation, documentation, and literature review. Data analysis techniques included examining the text, visuals, and narratives in TikTok content on the accounts @Kementrian Sosial RI, @Bobby Nasution, @Ferry Irwandi, and @CallMeHyung. Robert N. Entman's model analysis was used to identify how the media constructs an event through four main elements: defining problems, diagnosing causes, making moral judgments, and emphasizing solutions. The results of this study are as follows: 1) The discourse of flooding as an inevitable natural disaster. This study shows that flooding in TikTok reporting is constructed as a natural disaster caused by extreme weather factors, such as heavy rainfall and river overflows. This discourse positions flooding as a natural event beyond human control, so the focus of news coverage is directed at the impact and post-disaster management, rather than the structural causes. 2) The discourse of the government as the primary actor and helper. The dominant discourse in TikTok news coverage positions the government as the primary actor, present and acting swiftly in flood management. Video content consistently depicts the activities of government officials, officials, and volunteers involved in evacuating residents, distributing aid, and visiting affected locations. 3) The discourse of social concern and solidarity. The research also indicates the existence of a discourse of social concern and solidarity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of religious moderation values in the “Indahnya Syawal” episode of the Upin & Ipin animation series. The background of this research is based on the importance of religious moderation in multicultural societies, especially in the digital era, which is filled with diverse streams of information that may potentially trigger social conflict if not addressed wisely. Animated media plays a strategic role in conveying social and religious messages, particularly to children as the next generation. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach using the critical discourse analysis model of Teun A. van Dijk. The data were obtained from dialogues, storylines, and visual elements in the episode. The findings indicate that the values of religious moderation are represented through tolerance, togetherness, and mutual respect. Tolerance is reflected in scenes of mutual forgiveness, togetherness is shown through social interaction and visiting traditions, while respect is demonstrated through behaviors that honor elders and others. These values are constructed through simple dialogues, an educational storyline, and easily understood visual symbols. This study is expected to contribute to communication and da’wah studies, as well as to the utilization of animation as a medium for conveying moderate and tolerant religious messages more broadly
