Abstract

The high generation of waste in Indonesia, especially in the city of Surakarta, as well as suboptimal management has the potential to cause environmental pollution and increase the risk of health problems, especially in vulnerable groups such as scavengers at the Putri Cempo Landfill. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge and personal hygiene behavior in scavengers at Putri Cempo Landfill Surakarta with an observational design and this cross sectional approach has been carried out in February 2026. The research population was 287 scavengers, with a sample of 162 respondents taken using the purposive sampling technique. The results were obtained through primary data collected using a questionnaire that has been tested for validity and reliability and equipped with observational data. Data analysis was carried out univariate and bivariate using the Chi-Square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed that in the group of scavengers with low knowledge, most (56.2%) had poor personal hygiene behavior, while in the group with high knowledge, the majority (66.3%) had good personal hygiene behavior. The results of the Chi-Square test found that there was a significant relationship between knowledge and personal hygiene behavior in scavengers at the Putri Cempo Landfill Surakarta (p = 0.007). The conclusion of the research is the need to educate the scavenger community to increase personal hygiene knowledge and maximize the provision of sanitation facilities around the landfill.

Abstract

The environmental conditions of the Landfill (TPA) of unhygienic waste are at high risk to the skin health of workers, especially scavengers who interact directly with waste every day. This study aims to analyze the relationship between personal hygiene and symptoms of skin diseases in scavengers at TPA Putri Cempo Surakarta. This research is an analytical  observational research design through a cross sectional approach that has been carried out in February 2026 at the Putri Cempo Surakarta Landfill located in Mojosongo Village, Surakarta. Sampling involved 162 respondents obtained from a population of 287 people at the Putri Cempo Landfill through the calculation of the Lemeshow formula and purposive sampling techniques. Primary data was collected through filling out questionnaires and direct observation. The results showed that 78 (80.4%) scavengers with poor personal hygiene had experienced skin diseases in the last six months. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between the incidence of skin diseases and personal hygiene supported by the chi-square test with a p value of 0.028 (p < 0.05). So it can be concluded that poor personal hygiene has an impact on the appearance of skin disease symptoms in scavengers at landfills. Good preventive measures and personal hygiene are the key to increasing the safety and productivity of scavengers.

Abstract

Physical work stress among photocopy workers is an important occupational health issue, often arising from prolonged working duration, years of service, and work fatigue. Preliminary observations identified common symptoms among workers, including headaches, eye strain, and back pain, indicating the presence of physical stress related to job demands. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between years of service, daily working duration, and work fatigue with physical work stress among photocopy workers around Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta. This study employed a quantitative analytic cross-sectional design with a total sampling technique involving 56 photocopy workers. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, including the Industrial Fatigue Research Committee (IFRC) instrument to measure work fatigue and a modified NIOSH questionnaire to assess physical work stress, and analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation test. The results showed that years of service were not significantly associated with physical work stress (p = 0.539; r = -0.084). In contrast, daily working duration had a significant positive relationship with physical work stress (p = 0.001; r = 0.426), indicating a moderate correlation. The strongest relationship was found between work fatigue and physical work stress (p < 0.001; r = 0.823), demonstrating a very strong positive correlation. In conclusion, work fatigue is the most dominant factor associated with physical work stress among photocopy workers; therefore, interventions should prioritize fatigue management and the optimization of working duration.

Abstract

This study intends to evaluate the association between work posture and musculoskeletaldisorders (MSDs) among copier workers around Muhammadiyah University Surakarta. Thestudy used a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design and was conducted inFebruary 2025 at photocopying businesses located in several areas around the campus, namely Duwet Raya Street, Mendungan Street, Garuda Mas Street, Gatak 1 Street, Gatak 2Street, and Menco Raya Street. Using total sampling technique, all 78 photocopying workersaround Muhammadiyah University Surakarta were included, and 56 people were willing toparticipate in the study. Work posture was examined using the Rapid Entire Body Assessment(REBA) method to establish the level of ergonomic risk, whereas MSDs complaints weremeasured using the Nordic Body Map (NBM) questionnaire. Data analysis was performedunivariately and bivariately using the Spearman Rank Correlation test with a significancethreshold of 0.05. The results showed that most workers were in the low to moderate and highergonomic risk categories, with the most prevalent MSDs complaints in the neck, back, waist, right wrist, and calves. The Spearman Rank test showed a significant, fairly strong, andunidirectional relationship between work posture and MSDs complaints (p-value = 0.000; r =0.531), indicating that an increase in work posture risk was followed by an increase inmusculoskeletal complaints among photocopying .
