Abstract

The problem of increasing organic waste in Indonesia has prompted the need for environmentally friendly waste management solutions. One effective approach is bioconversion using Hermetia illucens or Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, which are capable of decomposing various types of organic waste. However, the growth and metamorphosis of BSF larvae are greatly influenced by environmental factors, particularly the pH of the growth medium, which plays an important role in the enzymatic activity and metabolism of the larvae. This study aims to determine the effect of media pH variation on the metamorphosis rate and biomass of Hermetia illucens larvae. The study was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) with three pH treatments, namely acidic (pH 4-5), neutral (pH 6.5-7.5), and alkaline (pH 8-9), each with three replicates. The medium used consisted of a mixture of vegetable and fruit waste with additional ingredients of rice bran and tofu pulp. The maggots used were 300 grams of larvae. Data analysis was performed using a one-way ANOVA test. The results showed that larvae reared in a medium with a neutral pH had the fastest metamorphosis time and highest biomass compared to those in acidic and alkaline media.
