Abstract

This research is entitled "The Role of Independent South Sumatra in Building Media Literacy on Educational Issues for Readers." The problems studied in this research include how Independent South Sumatra plays a role in improving media literacy and how journalist literacy is applied in presenting news related to educational issues. This research aims to identify and analyze the contribution of media in improving readers' media literacy through the presentation of educational news. The method used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. Data collection was carried out through interview techniques, observation, and documentation. The research informants consisted of one editor-in-chief and four journalists from Independent South Sumatra. The data analysis process was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. This research uses the media literacy theory from James W. Potter which includes four main components, namely knowledge structures, personal locus, skills, and information processing. This theory is used as a basis for examining the role of journalists and the media in building media literacy through reporting. The results of the study indicate that Independent South Sumatra has carried out its role in improving media literacy by presenting news that is informative, educational, and relevant to educational issues. Journalists have also implemented media literacy principles in their reporting, such as verifying information, delivering balanced news, and encouraging readers to be critical. However, several obstacles remain, including time constraints and the need for speed in news production

Abstract

This research is entitled "Representation of Batak Ulos Cultural Symbols in Instagram Branding @tobatenun as a Contemporary Pop Culture Image". This research discusses how the ulos cultural symbol is represented in digital media which has experienced a shift in the meaning of ulos which not only functions as a symbol of customs and rituals, but is also present in the modern realm through the creative industry and social media. Digital branding becomes a new space for local culture to be re-presented in a form that is more relevant to the times. This research uses a qualitative method with a Roland Barthes semiotic analysis approach, with data in the form of ten Instagram posts @tobatenun for the period June 2025 - March 2026 which were analyzed through three stages, namely denotation, connotation, and myth. Based on the analysis that has been done, it shows that ulos is represented as a cultural symbol that has experienced an expansion of meaning. Denotatively, ulos is displayed as a woven cloth with a typical Batak motif. Connotatively, ulos represents identity, elegance, and cultural aesthetic values. At the myth level, ulos is interpreted as a modern, flexible cultural symbol and has become part of a contemporary lifestyle without losing its traditional values. Overall, this research shows that the Instagram branding of @tobatenun has successfully shaped the image of ulos as contemporary pop culture through modern and communicative visuals. Ulos is not only preserved as a cultural heritage but also revived as a relevant identity in the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the self-disclosure of Roblox Podcast Map members and to identify the factors that influence their self-disclosure. This phenomenon is interesting to study because virtual spaces provide opportunities for individuals to interact and disclose themselves differently compared to interactions in the real world. This study employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive-exploratory method, in which data were obtained through observation, documentation, and analysis of players within the Roblox Podcast Map. The theories used in this study were Social Penetration Theory and the Online Disinhibition Effect Theory to identify the stages of self-disclosure development and the influence of communication in virtual environments. The results showed that the self-disclosure process occurs gradually. At the initial stage of entering the Podcast Map, players are presented with podcast rooms containing different topics, allowing them to choose rooms according to their interests. Players then enter podcast rooms based on the topics they are interested in and adjust themselves to the atmosphere of the conversation. Furthermore, the stages of self-disclosure that emerge include introduction, information exchange, and response. This self-disclosure process is influenced by anonymity, the virtual social environment, positive responses, interest in the topic, and shared experiences. This indicates that the Roblox Podcast Map not only functions as part of a game but also serves as a communication medium capable of shaping virtual social interactions and encouraging individuals to be more open in expressing themselves.
