Abstract

This study, entitled Press Restriction and Control in the Novel Jejak Langkah by Pramoedya Ananta Toer, examines the dynamics of colonial power over the indigenous press as represented in the third volume of the Buru Quartet. The novel portrays the socio-political conditions of the Dutch East Indies during the early phase of the national awakening through the experiences of Minke, an educated native who engages in journalism as a form of resistance against colonial injustice. This research is guided by two main problem formulations: how the Dutch colonial government imposed forms of restriction and control over press activities carried out by Minke in the novel Jejak Langkah, and how such restrictions and controls affected Minke’s movement and ideological development. This study employs a qualitative approach using literary text analysis, with data obtained from primary sources (the novel Jejak Langkah) and secondary sources such as books, journals, and relevant scholarly works. The analysis is framed using the theory of disciplinary power proposed by Michel Foucault. The findings reveal that colonial authorities exercised control over the press through censorship, strict press regulations, legal sanctions, economic pressure, and exile. These mechanisms functioned as instruments to suppress critical discourse and maintain colonial dominance. Furthermore, these restrictions significantly influenced Minke’s transformation from an individual-oriented thinker into a figure with collective awareness, emphasizing organized resistance and public advocacy. In conclusion, the novel Jejak Langkah reflects not only the historical reality of colonial press suppression but also the enduring tension between media and power. The struggle experienced by Minke demonstrates that press freedom is the result of continuous resistance against control, making the novel relevant to contemporary discussions on media independence.

Abstract

This study is entitled The Application of Journalism Principles in The Post. This research discusses how journalism principles are represented through scenes, dialogues, and characters’ actions in The Post. The background of this study is based on the importance of applying journalism principles in mass media practices, especially in delivering information related to public interest. The Post was chosen because it portrays the struggle of journalists and newspaper editors in revealing the confidential Pentagon Papers amid political pressure, legal threats, and power interests. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with the semiotic approach of Roland Barthes. The analysis was conducted through three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. This research also applies the theory of the nine elements of journalism proposed by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel as the main analytical framework. The results of the study show that The Post represents various journalism principles, such as obligation to the truth, loyalty to citizens, discipline of verification, independence, monitoring power, providing a public forum, making important issues interesting and relevant, keeping news proportional and comprehensive, and exercising personal conscience. These representations are shown through newsroom activities, editorial decision-making processes, and the courage of journalists in revealing information to the public. The conclusion of this study indicates that The Post functions not only as entertainment media but also as a representation of values, ethics, and social responsibility in journalism practice.

Abstract

This study analyzes the human‑interest narrative in the book Totto‑Chan: The Little Girl at the Window from a journalistic perspective. The research questions are: How is the human‑interest narrative presented in the book when viewed from a journalistic perspective? And How do journalistic narrative techniques construct human‑interest values in the book? The objectives are to analyze the presentation of human‑interest narrative in Totto‑Chan from a journalistic viewpoint, and examine the journalistic narrative techniques used to build human‑interest values. Theoretical grounding employs Teun A. van Dijk’s concept of human interest in discourse analysis, which explains how texts are structured to evoke attention, emotion, empathy, and reader engagement through human elements. This research uses a qualitative, descriptive‑analytic approach. Data collection is documentary (library) study, with primary data (the Totto‑Chan text) and secondary sources (related literature). The main research location is Gramedia Palembang, as the site for accessing the children’s literature collection and the translated Japanese edition. Data are analyzed qualitatively using systematic content analysis to identify themes, narrative strategies, and journalistic language elements that contribute to human‑interest value. The study aims to reveal patterns of human‑interest presentation and the journalistic narrative techniques that strengthen readers’ emotional involvement in Totto‑Chan.
