Abstract

Bobonaro clay is an expansive clay widely distributed along Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT). This type of clay poses significant challenges for construction due to its low bearing capacity and very high compressibility. Therefore, improvements in both its physical and mechanical characteristics are required. One of the proposed improvement methods is bacteria-based biostabilization. This study aims to determine the effect of biostabilization using Bacillus subtilis bacteria on the physical and mechanical properties of expansive clay soil. The method employed was descriptive analysis based on laboratory testing results. The original clay soil was subjected to physical and mechanical tests, while the biostabilized clay soil underwent mechanical testing using the direct shear test with a bacterial solution content of 6 percent of the dry soil weight. The results indicate positive changes in the form of increased soil shear strength parameters. The cohesion values for curing periods of 14 and 28 days increased by 30.53 percent and 34.74 percent, respectively, compared to the original soil. Similarly, the internal friction angle for curing periods of 14 and 28 days increased by 27.22 percent and 45.43 percent, respectively, compared to the untreated soil. Thus, biostabilization shows strong potential as a stabilization method for expansive clay soils.
