Abstract

The issue of gender is a never-ending issue, especially related to the balance of gender roles in the reality of everyday life. The focus of this study is to analyze the balance of gender roles in the QS review. al-Nisā (4): 34 about Qawwām by involving a theory from a famous figure, namely Jacques Derrida's deconstruction theory. The data collection method used is qualitative, which typically requires analysis. Then the results of the discussion in this study are: First, that by using Derrida's deconstruction, it can provide color in a person's thinking style when understanding a text, the text will not be interpreted with only one meaning or even a final meaning, but will continue to produce new meanings that continue to be sustainable. Second, deconstruction does not justify or blame, but serves as a mediator by examining the meanings that emerge from reading the conditions of social reality. Third, Derrida's deconstruction can reveal that the term Qawwām does not immediately refer to male superiority, but rather to a situational division of roles. Thus, the relationship between husband and wife can be seen as a dynamic partnership that complements rather than hierarchizes.

Abstract

This study examines the theory of the chronological transmission of the Qur'an from the perspective of Sir William Muir, who is considered one of the significant Orientalist constructions that influenced the evolution of contemporary exegesis studies. The main focus of this study is to systematically describe the six stages of the revelation of the Qur'an as presented by Muir, as well as to analyse his role in the formation of the historical-critical approach in tafsir studies. By applying a descriptive qualitative analysis methodology complemented by a historical-comparative review, this research explores Muir's seminal work, The Life of Mahomet and History of Islam. The findings of the study indicate that Sir William Muir categorised the process of the revelation of the Qur'an into six main periods: (1) the pre-prophetic recitation period; (2) the early prophetic period; (3) the period of rebellion and opposition to the Quraish tribe; (4) the period of narratives about the Jews and Arab society; (5) the period of the lifting of the ban approaching the hijrah; and (6) the Madinah period. The relevance of Muir's theory to modern exegesis studies is evident in its influence in shaping the historical-critical approach that places revelation in its chronological, social, and cultural context, thereby helping to open up a more dynamic understanding of the process of revelation and interpretation of the Qur'an. The contribution of this research lies in affirming the relevance of Muir's methodology to the modern interpretation paradigm, namely in encouraging scientific awareness of the importance of reading the Qur'an chronologically and contextually.

Abstract

Abstract

This study discusses the classification of tafsir according to Walid A. Saleh's perspective, focusing on an analysis of al-Thaʿlabī's book Tafsir al-Kasyf wa l-bayān. The main objective is to map the position and contribution of al-Thaʿlabī's tafsir in the classical tafsir tradition through a conceptual approach developed in his work The Formation of the Classical Tafsir Tradition. This study uses a qualitative library research method with a character study approach, which relies on the analysis of primary and secondary texts related to tafsir and the thoughts of Walid A. Saleh. The results show that Saleh classifies tafsir works into three main categories: First, encyclopaedic tafsir (muṭawwalāt al-tafsīr). Second, madrasah tafsir. Third, Hāsyiyah madrasah tafsir. These three categories reflect different functions and levels of understanding in the interpretation process. Saleh also criticises previous models of tafsir classification, such as those proposed by al-Dzahabi, Ignaz Goldziher, and John Wansbrough, which he considers to be insufficiently comprehensive and overly reductionist. Through the concept of ‘tafsir as a genealogical tradition,’ Saleh emphasises that every work of tafsir is the result of a dialectic with previous tafsir traditions. His idea enriches the discourse of tafsir historiography and offers a new paradigm that is more historical, dialogical, and contextual in understanding the development of Qur'anic tafsir.
