Abstract

This study aims to explore and describe the symbolic meanings of traditional cuisine in the Mongaruwa tradition among the Gorontalo community. A qualitative approach with a descriptive design was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of cultural practices embedded in traditional food. Data were collected through literature review, cultural observation, and documentation of several traditional foods, including Bajoe, Tiliaya, Nasi Kuning, Bilindi, Lutu, and Watingo. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns and underlying meanings. The findings reveal that traditional foods in the Mongaruwa tradition embody important cultural values such as togetherness, gratitude, prosperity, and respect for guests and family. Each type of food carries symbolic meanings that reflect the social and cultural norms of the Gorontalo community. Furthermore, the tradition shows how traditional cuisine functions as a medium for preserving and transmitting local wisdom across generations. In conclusion, traditional cuisine in the Mongaruwa tradition not only serves a consumptive purpose but also represents a meaningful cultural expression that supports identity and continuity.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how language in the Dikili tradition, performed through Modikili practices, represents and preserves Gorontalo culture. A qualitative descriptive approach was used to obtain a deeper understanding of the ritual language found in the tradition. The study applied Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis, focusing on textual, discursive, and social dimensions. Data were collected through participant observation, documentation of ritual utterances, and semi-structured interviews with cultural practitioners and community members. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of meaning and cultural representation within the discourse. The findings show that the Dikili tradition contains religious metaphors, repetition, parallel structures, and poetic expressions that reflect spiritual values, social harmony, and collective identity. In addition, Modikili practices serve as a medium for preserving and passing down local wisdom across generations. In conclusion, the ritual language used in the Dikili tradition is not only a symbolic expression but also an important cultural practice that helps maintain Gorontalo cultural identity in modern society.

Abstract

Background: The preservation of local literature rooted in oral traditions faces new challenges and opportunities in the digital era. Digital technologies enable documentation and wider dissemination, yet they also raise concerns about cultural authenticity, community sovereignty, and sustainability. A systematic synthesis is required to clarify current scholarly directions. Aims: This study aims to: (1) identify dominant themes and research approaches in recent studies on the digital preservation of local literatures; (2) examine how scholars conceptualize the shift from oral to digital forms; and (3) analyze the documented educational impact of digitization within indigenous and local communities. Methods: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Searches across Scopus, Google Scholar, EBSCOhost, and ProQuest covered English and Indonesian publications from 2010–2025. Studies focused on preserving local literary content were included, while purely technical works were excluded. Data were synthesized through thematic analysis. Results: Six thematic clusters emerged: Digital Tools and Innovation; Community Participation and Co-Creation; Ethical Access and Cultural Protocols; Multimedia Storytelling; Digital Knowledge Management; and Collaborative Institutional Models. Scholars largely frame digital transition as cultural continuity and narrative hybridity shaped by technology but grounded in community stewardship and digital sovereignty. Educationally, digitization enhances reading comprehension, writing skills, engagement, accessibility, and cultural relevance. Implications: Effective preservation requires culturally grounded, participatory, and multidisciplinary approaches. Policymakers and practitioners should strengthen community-led digital stewardship, establish ethical access guidelines, and integrate digitized local literatures into curricula for sustainable cultural continuity.

Abstract

Local literature learning plays an important role in higher education by supporting the preservation of cultural values and the development of students’ cultural identity. When implemented through a deep learning approach, literature education can foster meaningful understanding, critical reflection, and culturally grounded learning experiences. Accordingly, this study aims to examine (1) the contribution of local or regional literature education to students’ cultural identity development in higher education; (2) the pedagogical applications of deep learning approaches in literature and cultural studies; and (3) how the integration of local literature and deep learning enhances students’ cultural awareness and social sensitivity. This study employs a systematic literature review design by analyzing 19 peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last ten years. The findings indicate that local literature functions as a culturally contextualized knowledge system that transmits traditional values and social meanings, thereby strengthening students’ cultural identity and sense of belonging. Deep learning pedagogy encourages higher-order thinking, reflective engagement, and contextual interpretation of literary texts. Furthermore, the integration of local literature and deep learning enhances students’ cultural awareness, empathy, and social sensitivity. In conclusion, integrating local literature learning with deep learning pedagogy offers a culturally responsive approach to literature education in higher education.
