Abstract

The Hunger Games is a trilogy of novels that were made into movies. The Hunger Games are related to social life, such as class conflict and materialism, this is interesting to examine in literary criticism using a Marxist approach. The topic of this research is Marx's materialism in the movies entitled Hunger Games trilogy. This research analyzes materialism related to class conflict, there are two class conflicts, namely, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat. This research focuses on two problems, namely, (1) the depiction of the bourgeoisie and proletariat in the movie Hunger Games sequel and (2) the effect of being bourgeoisie and proletariat toward the main characters. This research uses the theory of Marx (1998). This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. The results found a depiction of the bourgeoisie as powerful, wealth, and leadership. Meanwhile, the proletariat is a laborer or worker, poor, and powerless. This research finds the effects of being a bourgeoisie, namely, being powerful and oppressor while the proletariat becomes obedient and oppressed. Therefore, the aim of this research is that readers can learn about Marxism, especially about materialism related to class conflict namely, the bourgeoisie and the proletariat.

Abstract

Because of the interest and fans of American football in Indonesia, there is a need for information and understanding about the word formation in American football. Understanding the word formation process is very important in everyday life to communicate and understand each other. The research aimed to analyze the word formation, type, meaning, and function of various languages of American football on the official NFL.com news website. The research is classified as a qualitative descriptive one. The research data are in the form of words, phrases, and clauses containing word formation found in NFL.com news published in November – December 2022. The findings were that there were four-word formations which were found: compounding, borrowing, acronym, and derivation. The results showed that the highest data frequency related to word formation is compounding. Moreover, there were 6 types, that is, injury, players, rules of time, game techniques, scores, and teams. The type of team appeared most often. Each datum has a different meaning, and function depending on the context of the sentence.

Abstract

The aims of this research are (1) to describe the crimes committed by Bigger Thomas as themain character in Richard Wright’s novel entitled Native Son, and (2) to analyze the influenceBigger Thomas’ self-expression on against racismin Richard Wright’s novel entitled Native Son.The data are words, phrases, clauses, and sentences, collected by document analysis, taken froma novel entitled Native Son that is written by Richard Wright. These data are then called asquotation. The theories used to analyze the data are racism and crime. Then sociological andpsychological approaches are used to analyzed  the data in this research.  The crimes that arecommitted by Bigger Thomas in the novel are assault, negligent homicide, murder, and  fraud.The self-expressions of Bigger are hatred, fear, powerless, desperation, ashamed, and prejudice.Â
