Abstract

This study examines the contextualization of prophetic traditions regarding grave styles through a comparative analysis of burial practices in Panggentungan, Gowa Regency, and Nangani’u, Bima Regency. It aims to analyze the quality of hadiths concerning the lahad (side-niche grave) and syaqq (trench grave), comprehend their textual meanings, and uncover their implementation within local traditions. Utilizing a qualitative methodology embedded in the living sunnah and fiqh al-hadith approaches, data were gathered through literature review, interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that the traditions (hadiths) concerning lahad and syaqq are classified as hasan li ghairihi (good due to external corroboration), thus serving as a valid juristic basis for burial practices. While the Gowa community generally implements the lahad model, the Bima society retains the syaqq model as an inherited, intergenerational tradition. This variation demonstrates that the implementation of hadith is significantly shaped by societal reception, social conditions, and cultural dynamics. This study underscores that the sunnah operates not merely as a normative text but actively lives within religious practices, adapting to local contexts while upholding the foundational values of Islamic law.
