Abstract

The transformation of social media has significantly reshaped patterns of social interaction and contributed to the emergence of polarization in digital spaces through the mechanisms of echo chambers and filter bubbles. These mechanisms reinforce confirmation bias, limit the diversity of perspectives, and foster exclusive social relationships. Consequently, various forms of symbolic violence have emerged, including stereotyping, prejudice, hate speech, cyberbullying, dehumanization, intolerance, and the erosion of social cohesion, particularly in sensitive issues such as religion and politics. This study aims to analyze the manifestations of polarization in digital spaces and examine the relevance of the Tat Twam Asi doctrine as a relational ethical framework for reconstructing moral awareness and fostering humane interactions in the digital era. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach using a netnographic method through digital observation and documentation of user interactions on Instagram. Research subjects were selected through purposive sampling based on predetermined research criteria. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, and were validated through source and methodological triangulation. The findings reveal that Instagram has undergone a functional shift from a public sphere for dialogue into an arena of identity contestation characterized by symbolic conflict. Social media algorithms contribute to the intensification of informational segregation, the reproduction of stereotypes, and affective polarization through the dissemination of emotional and controversial content. Contextual framing further encourages symbolic violence, negative stigmatization, and the reinforcement of prejudice. These conditions reflect an ethical crisis marked by declining empathy, social responsibility, and respect for human dignity. In response to these challenges, the Tat Twam Asi doctrine offers an ethical framework that emphasizes human interconnectedness, mutual respect, and moral responsibility. The internalization of the values of Ahimsa (nonviolence), Daya (compassion), and Satya (truthfulness) has the potential to promote digital communication that is more reflective, dialogical, inclusive, and civil. These findings affirm that polarization in digital spaces is shaped not only by technological and algorithmic factors but also by a crisis of moral consciousness. In this context, the Tat Twam Asi doctrine can serve as a philosophical and ethical foundation for developing a more humane, inclusive, and diversity-respecting digital ecosystem.
