Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of borrowing words, analyze their semantic changes, and explore the role of globalization in language adaptation as observed in two selected articles from BBC Indonesian. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzed data from two articles published in 2022, applying Hocket's theory (2013) to categorize borrowing words into loanwords, loan blends, and loan shifts, and Riemer's theory (2010) to classify semantic changes into specialization, generalization, amelioration, and pejoration. The findings revealed loan blends as the most common borrowing type, followed by loanwords and loan shifts. Generalization was the most frequent semantic change, with no instances of amelioration or pejoration. This study highlighted how BBC Indonesia, as a global media platform, integrated and adapted foreign words into Indonesian, contributing to the understanding of linguistic borrowing and its impact on the development of the Indonesian language.
