Abstract

Abstract. The global ecological crisis is becoming increasingly severe due to the excessive exploitation of natural resources, one of which is deforestation in Sumatra. Forest destruction in this region is driven by land conversion for plantations, mining, and infrastructure development, resulting in biodiversity loss, ecological disasters, and climate change. This issue indicates that environmental crises are caused not only by weak policies but also by an anthropocentric paradigm that places nature solely as an object of human exploitation. This study aims to analyze the shift in environmental ethical paradigms from anthropocentrism to ecocentrism as a philosophical solution to deforestation in Sumatra. The research employs a qualitative method through a literature study using a philosophical-critical approach. The findings reveal that the anthropocentric paradigm encourages systematic forest exploitation, while ecocentrism offers a perspective that recognizes the intrinsic value of nature and the importance of ecosystem sustainability. This paradigm shift can be realized through ethical transformation, political-legal reforms, and the development of public ecological awareness. Therefore, addressing deforestation requires a transformation in the moral paradigm of humans toward nature, not merely technicalĀ approaches.
