Abstract

Urban slum settlements that have developed along riverbanks face complex challenges related to waste management, which directly affect environmental quality and public health. Limited infrastructure, inadequate waste collection services, and community behaviors that do not yet support sustainable waste management are the main factors contributing to increased river pollution in these areas. This study aims to comprehensively examine the concepts, challenges, and strategies of waste management in urban riverbank slum settlements based on findings from previous studies. The method employed is a literature review, involving the analysis of relevant scientific articles, policy reports, and official documents at both national and international levels. The results indicate that waste management problems in riverbank areas are generally influenced by unequal access to waste services, weak policy enforcement, and limited community participation. Strategies commonly recommended in the literature include strengthening community-based waste management systems, improving infrastructure and waste services, integrating slum upgrading policies, and promoting sustainable environmental education. This review is expected to serve as a conceptual reference for policymaking and planning more effective and sustainable waste management in urban riverbank slum areas.

Abstract

Industrial activities have the potential to produce solid, liquid, and gaseous waste from production processes and supporting activities. This condition also occurs at PT Pertamina Patra Niaga Fuel Terminal Baturaja, South Sumatra Province, as a fuel distribution company. The domestic wastewater produced has physical, chemical, and biological characteristics including pH, temperature, color, BOD, COD, TSS, oil and grease, and E-coli and coliform bacteria. Efforts made to minimize environmental impacts, the company implemented a study on domestic liquid waste management, especially greywater, through a treatment process and reuse as closed toilet rinse water. Wastewater treatment is carried out using a biofilter Wastewater Treatment Plant with a combination of anaerobic and aerobic processes. This study aims to assess the quality of wastewater in the inlet and outlet ponds of the WWTP. The research method uses primary and secondary data collection. The results of the analysis indicate that the quality of the processed wastewater has met the quality standards according to the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number P.68/MENLHK/Setjen/Kum.1/8/2016.

Abstract

Waste problems in urban slum settlements located along riverbanks have become one of the main causes of river environmental degradation. High population density, poor sanitation conditions, limited waste management facilities, and low public awareness of environmental cleanliness have contributed to increasing river water pollution and the decline of urban ecosystem quality. This study aims to analyze the relationship between waste problems and river environmental degradation in urban slum areas through a literature review approach. The research method was conducted by reviewing various scientific journals, books, research reports, and policy documents related to waste management, river pollution, slum settlements, and urban environments. The findings indicate that the direct disposal of domestic waste into rivers remains a common practice in slum settlements due to inadequate waste management services and the socio-economic conditions of the community. These conditions have resulted in declining water quality, sedimentation, river flow blockages, increased flood risks, and the emergence of various environmental-based diseases. In addition, weak supervision and poor implementation of environmental policies have further exacerbated river degradation in urban areas. This study emphasizes that addressing waste problems in urban slum settlements requires a comprehensive approach through improving waste management infrastructure, environmental education, community empowerment, and strengthening policies and collaboration among stakeholders to support the sustainability of urban river environments.
