Abstract-Profitability is the primary objective of every retail company in its operations. One retail sector considered particularly important is that of department stores, which provide a wide range of fashion items. PT Matahari Department Store Tbk is a retail company that has been operating in Indonesia since 1958 and has become a major player; however, in recent years, it has faced the phenomenon of store closures. This study aims to identify the financial performance issues of PT Matahari Department Store Tbk by examining the Debt to Equity Ratio (DER) and Debt to Asset Ratio (DAR) and their impact on the company’s ability to achieve maximum profitability, as measured by the Return on Assets (ROA) ratio. The study employs a quantitative descriptive method based on secondary data in the form of annual financial reports downloaded from the Indonesia Stock Exchange website for the 2022–2025 period. Additionally, the study utilizes a literature review method by examining relevant journals and reference books related to this research. The results of this study indicate that during the 2022–2025 period, in terms of capital structure, the company remains dependent on debt. This is evidenced by a debt-to-equity ratio (DER) that exceeds industry standards and falls into the “poor” category. During the same period, the provision of total assets for operations also largely relied on debt. This is evident in the DAR ratio, which exceeds industry standards and is therefore classified as poor. As a result of the deterioration in the DER and DAR ratios, profitability—measured by the ROA ratio for the 2022–2025 period—remains below industry standards and is therefore rated as poor.
