Abstract

The Reproduction of Patriarchal Culture in Netizens' Comments on Tiara's Case on TikTok. Violence against women remains a persistent issue in Indonesia. One case that attracted public attention was the murder of Tiara by her partner, Alvi, which was widely discussed on TikTok. Responses from TikTok users revealed tendencies toward victim blaming and justification of the perpetrator, indicating the reproduction of patriarchal culture in digital spaces. This study aims to identify the representation of female victims and male perpetrators and to analyze the reproduction of patriarchal culture in users' responses to Tiara's murder case. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Sara Mills' Critical Discourse Analysis. Data were collected through documentation of TikTok users' responses and analyzed using the concepts of subject-object position and reader position. The findings show that the female victim was represented as partly responsible for the violence she experienced, while the male perpetrator was represented as someone whose actions could be understood or justified. Patriarchal culture was reproduced through victim blaming, moral surveillance of women, moral legitimization of the perpetrator, and the normalization of male aggression.

Abstract

Limited financial literacy among Indonesian university students is associated with increasing financial pressures faced by young adults. Home Sweet Loan portrays these issues through Kaluna's efforts to own a house while facing her family's financial demands. This study examines how university students interpret representations of financial literacy and family roles in the film. A qualitative approach was employed using Stuart Hall's reception analysis, supported by Berger and Luckmann's Social Construction of Reality, Gerbner's Cultivation Theory, and Fishbein and Ajzen's Theory of Reasoned Action. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with five university students selected through purposive sampling. The findings indicate that three participants occupied the dominant-hegemonic position, while two adopted a negotiated position. Financial literacy was interpreted as the ability to plan finances, prioritize needs, achieve financial independence, and maintain financial transparency within the family. Interpretations of family roles varied according to each participant's background. Home Sweet Loan was understood as a medium that encourages reflection on financial management and family relationships.

Abstract

The dominance of beauty standards on social media, which portray slim bodies, fair skin, and flawless appearances as the ideal for women, remains a serious issue in Indonesia. This study aims to describe the denotative and connotative meanings of body positivity and to analyze biases in the representation of women’s bodies in Tara Basro’s content. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a critical paradigm and Roland Barthes’s semiotic method, the research object consists of Tara Basro’s Instagram posts containing messages of body positivity. The analysis was conducted by examining the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings of the visual and textual elements in the posts. The results indicate that body positivity is represented through the natural appearance of women’s bodies, dark brown skin tones, skin textures, body contours, and narratives of self-acceptance. These representations signify courage, authenticity, and resistance to dominant beauty standards. However, this study also found an ambivalence because these representations still contain aesthetic biases, commercial biases, and social class biases. This study concludes that the representation of body positivity in Tara Basro’s Instagram content serves as a space for a battle of meanings between resistance to beauty standards and negotiation with the logic of social media.

Abstract

The growth of gaming live streaming on TikTok has encouraged digital donation practices through Saweria as a form of audience participation. This study analyzes the influence of streamer responsiveness and live streaming interaction on audience participation in Saweria donations among student audiences watching TikTok Live Gaming, using a quantitative explanatory approach through a survey of 106 active Diponegoro University students, analyzed with multiple linear regression. The results show that streamer responsiveness and live streaming interaction have a positive and significant effect on donation participation, both partially and simultaneously (Sig. = 0.000), with streamer responsiveness as the more dominant predictor (Beta = 0.594) compared to live streaming interaction (Beta = 0.367), and a coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.902, indicating that higher streamer responsiveness and stronger interaction are associated with greater audience intention to donate via Saweria.

Abstract

Freedom of expression has made TikTok a space where users can share their feelings, opinions, and daily activities without hesitation. However, this creative freedom may also trigger excessive self-disclosure, which can potentially endanger users themselves. The purpose of this study is to determine the influence of TikTok social media usage intensity on women’s self-disclosure in beauty content and to identify the influence of peer communication intensity on women’s self-disclosure in beauty content. This study employs a quantitative method with an explanatory approach. The population consists of 2,799 students from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Diponegoro University, Semarang, with a sample size of 100 students. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression, coefficient of determination, F test, and t-test. The results indicate that TikTok social media usage intensity and peer communication intensity have a positive and significant influence on self-disclosure. The coefficient of determination (adjusted R square) is 0.793, meaning that both independent variables explain 79.3% of women’s self-disclosure in beauty content

Abstract

This study is grounded in the growing phenomenon of alternative Instagram accounts—private secondary accounts used as a more personal space for self-expression—which have become increasingly common among Generation Z university students yet remain underexplored from a psychological perspective. A mixed methods approach was employed with emphasis on qualitative inquiry, combining a preliminary survey of 35 Communication Science students at Diponegoro University (class of 2022) with in-depth interviews involving 5 selected informants. Data were analyzed through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding stages. Drawing on Rosenberg's (1965) theory of self-esteem and Jourard's concept of self-disclosure, this study aims to understand the role of self-esteem in students' self-disclosure on alternative Instagram accounts. The findings reveal that self-esteem operates not as a static variable but as a contextual and audience-responsive condition. On primary accounts with broad and heterogeneous audiences, informants' self-esteem was more vulnerable due to fear of social judgment, resulting in more controlled, defensive, and curated self-expression; several informants admitted to having deleted posts after publishing them. On alternative accounts, where audiences had been carefully filtered and consisted primarily of trusted close contacts, self-esteem was more stable, enabling freer, more spontaneous, and more authentic self disclosure. Fear of judgment served as a limiting factor on primary accounts, while the sense of safety from a trusted audience functioned as a catalyst for openness on alternative accounts. Social support in the form of likes, story replies, and appreciation from followers strengthened informants' self-esteem, which in turn encouraged greater self-disclosure. This pattern forms a mutually reinforcing dynamic: stable self-esteem drives self-disclosure; positive responses generate social validation; and social validation further strengthens self-esteem. This study affirms that self-esteem functions as a psychological factor that comprehensively shapes students' self-disclosure patterns and that the creation of alternative accounts represents a deliberate psychological adaptive strategy by Generation Z students.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has transformed patterns of political participation in society through the practice of digital activism on social media. The #ResetIndonesia hashtag on platform X emerged during the August 2025 political demonstrations as a symbol of digital resistance against government policies. The objective of this study is to identify the themes of public conversations formed within the digital activism of #ResetIndonesia and to examine the forms of emotions expressed in these conversations. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type using Braun dan Clarke’s thematic analysis method. The data were collected from tweets containing the #ResetIndonesia hashtag on platform X during the period of August 28 to September 11, 2025 through a web scraping technique. Findings reveal five dominant themes: sentiment toward government institutions, the crisis of justice in Indonesia, reflections on national conditions, acts of resistance, and public solidarity. The discourse manifests intense affective engagement through emotions such as anger, hatred, and hope. Grounded in theories of digital activism, connective action, and affective publics, this research explains how personal emotions in digital spaces can form networks of collective political participation on social media.
