Abstract

Insomnia is often associated with physiological and cognitive arousal. Currently, there are two main treatments for insomnia: cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and pharmacotherapy. Pharmacotherapy is less effective long-term and has undesirable side effects. CBT-I focuses on behaviors and cognitions surrounding sleep habits. In insomnia, brainwave frequencies tend to be lower in the alpha band and higher in the beta and theta bands. By reducing cortical hyperarousal, neurofeedback training can alleviate insomnia symptoms. Neurofeedback can be used as a therapy for insomnia alongside other treatment methods to reduce dependence on pharmacotherapy. Studies reporting a reduction in subjective sleep complaints have shown a decrease in Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores after neurofeedback therapy.
