Abstract

Islamic education in Indonesia is an institution that existed long before the country's independence; however, its position within the modern state structure has been highly influenced by the direction of government politics and policies. This study aims to analyze the political position of Islamic education within Indonesia’s legal system, identify various contemporary issues arising from current policies, and formulate applicable future strategies and solutions. Using a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach, data were collected from secondary sources such as the National Education System Law (UU Sisdiknas), the Pesantren Law (UU Pesantren), and scientific journal articles. The findings reveal that legal frameworks such as the National Education System Law No. 20 of 2003 and the Pesantren Law No. 18 of 2019 represent crucial achievements in the politics of Islamic education. Nevertheless, contemporary challenges including administrative dualism that contributes to disparities in regional government budget allocations (APBD) for madrasahs, quality-related issues, digital disruption that triggers the digital divide, and the politicization of religious moderation instruments require synergistic hybrid policy reforms between central and local governments. Such reforms are essential to establish transformative governance of Islamic education while maintaining its moral identity.
