Abstract

The increasing number of coffee shops in the Bangau Sakti area of Pekanbaru reflects a shift in student lifestyles impacted by globalization, modernization, and the need for more flexible social and academic spaces. This study aims to understand student behavior when relaxing in coffee shops, the factors that influence their choice of coffee shops as gathering places, and the reasons behind the development of this activity into a lifestyle. Using qualitative methods and a phenomenological approach, data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews with seven students and one key informant, and documentation. The research findings indicate that coffee shops function as places for students to engage in social activities, study, and relax. The most important driving factors are the comfort of the facilities, ongoing trends in society, the need for social networks, and the symbolic meanings formed through interactions, in accordance with the concept of mind, self, and society in symbolic interaction theory. In conclusion, relaxing in coffee shops is not only a recreational activity, but has also transformed into part of students' identity and lifestyle. The implication is that coffee shops function as new social spaces that influence the way students interact, consume patterns, and the dynamics of student life.
