Abstract

Waste management remains a major challenge in rural areas, primarily due to low public awareness regarding proper waste disposal. Irregular waste handling further deteriorates environmental conditions and negatively impacts public health and the aesthetic quality of residential areas. This community service project aimed to design an adaptive and effective waste disposal facility system while enhancing community awareness through educational and socialization activities. The project employed an applied research design with a qualitative descriptive approach. The subjects consisted of the PKK mobilization team as the primary partners, involving 44 respondents in the pre-test and 26 in the post-test trial. Data were collected through field observations, interviews, documentation, and pre- and post-test instruments validated by content experts. Data analysis was conducted descriptively and comparatively to assess changes in community knowledge before and after the socialization activities. The results indicate that the construction of waste disposal facilities at strategic locations was successfully implemented, and the socialization activities effectively strengthened community understanding of the importance of cleanliness and proper waste management. The study concludes that providing adequate facilities combined with an educational approach can lay the foundation for behavioral change, fostering cleaner and more sustainable lifestyles in rural communities.
