Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Discovery Learning model in enhancing mathematical concept comprehension among seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 2 Lirik. Mathematical concept comprehension constitutes a fundamental capability that learners must develop, as it enables them to understand, interpret, and apply mathematical principles correctly during problem-solving activities. Nevertheless, a significant number of students continue to face challenges in grasping mathematical concepts, largely because classroom instruction remains predominantly teacher-directed. A qualitative descriptive methodology was adopted for this investigation. Participants were drawn from the seventh-grade cohort at SMP Negeri 2 Lirik, with data gathered through classroom observation, in-depth interviews, and document review. The analytical framework employed was the Miles and Huberman model, encompassing data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion formulation. Trustworthiness of the data was established through source triangulation and methodological triangulation. Findings revealed that the adoption of Discovery Learning substantially improved students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics. Learners demonstrated heightened participation throughout sessions, greater confidence in articulating their reasoning, and an improved capacity to express mathematical ideas in their own words. Moreover, students showed notable advancement in tackling mathematical problems and transferring concepts across different contexts. Discovery Learning also fostered a more interactive and engaging classroom environment, as students took an active role in constructing their own understanding. The study concludes that Discovery Learning is an effective instructional approach for deepening mathematical concept comprehension among seventh-grade learners and may serve as a viable alternative to conventional teaching methods.Keywords: discovery learning; mathematical conceptual understanding; mathematics learning; junior high school; qualitative research

Abstract

This study investigates the mathematical communication competencies of students engaging in Problem Based Learning (PBL) within a classroom setting. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, with the study conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Lirik. Six participants were selected, representing three proficiency categories: high, intermediate, and low. Data were gathered through classroom observation, written assessments, and structured interviews. Results revealed that high-ability students articulated mathematical reasoning coherently and applied symbolic notation accurately. Intermediate-ability students were capable of completing tasks but provided incomplete justifications, while low-ability students faced considerable challenges in expressing mathematical concepts verbally and in writing. Overall, the PBL environment fostered greater student participation in collaborative discussion and facilitated the development of mathematical communication skills.Keywords: Problem Based Learning, mathematical communication, mathematics education

Abstract

This study examined the influence of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on eighth-grade students' mathematical communication abilities at SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Lala. A quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design and Posttest-Only Control Design was employed. The participants consisted of two intact classes: class VIII-A served as the experimental group receiving PBL instruction, while class VIII-B functioned as the control group undergoing conventional teaching methods. Mathematical communication skills were assessed through a structured essay test. Statistical analysis revealed that students in the experimental group demonstrated significantly superior mathematical communication competencies compared to their counterparts in the control group. These findings confirm that PBL exerts a positive influence on students' capacity to communicate mathematical ideas.Keywords: Problem Based Learning, mathematical communication skills, mathematics learning

Abstract

This study aims to examine students’ ability to comprehend mathematical concepts in the topic of Linear Equations in One Variable (LEOV) at SMP Negeri 3 Sungai Lala. The analysis was carried out on five test items designed to assess students’ conceptual understanding across multiple indicators. Findings revealed that a considerable number of students encounter difficulty in connecting mathematical ideas with appropriate representations and procedures. More specifically, on the first item, a portion of students struggled to restate the LEOV concept in their own words. On the second item, most students tended to skip procedural steps and present only final answers. On the third item, many were unable to follow the given instructions, jumping directly to results without constructing a mathematical model first. On the fourth item, students showed limited ability to distinguish between examples and non-examples of the concept. On the fifth item, students were not able to apply the concept accurately within a problem-solving context, as they lacked a clear strategy for identifying known and unknown elements. Overall, these findings indicate that students’ mathematical conceptual understanding remains at a low level and requires systematic improvement through more structured and concept-oriented instructional approaches.Keywords: mathematical conceptual understanding; linear equation in one variable; mathematical representation; qualitative descriptive; junior high school
