Abstract

Abstract   Background: Subjective well-being is an individual's assessment of their quality of life, which includes life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect. In type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) patients, chronic disease conditions can cause psychological disorders that impact on decreasing subjective well-being. Psychological and social factors related to subjective well-being need to be understood as a basis for improving the quality of life of type 2 DM patients. Objective: To analyze the relationship between gender, marital status, occupation, personality, self-esteem, family support, and religiosity with subjective well-being in type 2 DM patients at Besuki Regional General Hospital and to determine the most dominant factors. Method: Quantitative research with a cross-sectional design on 117 respondents using a total sampling technique. The research instrument used a questionnaire on respondent characteristics, personality, self-esteem, family support, religiosity, and subjective well-being. Data analysis used the Chi-Square test and logistic regression. Results: Personality (p=0.001), self-esteem (p=0.000), family support (p=0.002), and religiosity (p=0.006) were significantly associated with subjective well-being. Gender, marital status, and occupation were not significantly associated with subjective well-being. The most dominant variable was self-esteem. Conclusion: Psychological and social factors play an important role in the subjective well-being of type 2 DM patients, especially self-esteem.
