Abstract

Abstract

The geomorphological analysis of the Jampang Tengah area, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, aims to identify the ongoing geomorphological processes and geomorphic units within the study area. Based on its geographical location, the study area is part of the Bogor Basin, which is characterized by relatively unique geological settings in terms of stratigraphy, geological structure, and geomorphology. The geomorphic units were identified through several aspects, including morphological (physical) aspects consisting of morphography and morphometry, as well as morphodynamic aspects. The research was conducted using field observation methods and studio analysis based on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The research process began with preliminary identification through the interpretation of Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data, which was correlated with field features through direct observations from various strategic points. Supporting phenomena were described and measured to collect geomorphological data. The identified geomorphic units in the study area include Highly Eroded Denudational High Hills, Moderately Eroded Denudational High Hills, Fault Zone High Hills, Synclinal Hills, and Karst Hills. These geomorphic units can be utilized as information for further studies, disaster mitigation support data, and regional development planning.

Abstract

Detailed petrographic characterization aimed at constraining the metamorphic evolution of the Tarap Formation remains limited. This study presents petrographic analyses of 11 metamorphic rock samples collected from the Tarap Formation in OKU Selatan, South Sumatra. The results identify a range of metamorphic rock types, including metalimestone, metasiltstone, calcite–chlorite marble, muscovite–quartz phyllite, quartz–muscovite schist, muscovite–chlorite schist, and quartz–hornblende schist. The protoliths identified were calcareous rocks, quartz–feldspathic sandstones, and shales, which may be lithologically correlated to the Kuantan Formation and Gunungkasih Complex. The metamorphic facies identified are sub-greenschist, greenschist, and lower amphibolite facies. Prograde metamorphism and the subsequent development of mylonitic texture that overprints the main foliation are interpreted to be possibly related to the tectonic evolution of Sumatra during the Early Cretaceous, particularly subduction of the Ngalau Ocean (Meso-Tethys) beneath the Sundaland margin (West Sumatra). The subsequent arc-continent collision from the Late Cretaceous, causing reverse faulting and fold–thrust deformation, facilitated exhumation of the rocks, potentially resulting in retrograde metamorphism and cataclastic texture.

Abstract

The Garba Formation constitutes part of the Woyla volcanic arc system, which is interpreted as an inter-oceanic volcanic arc that later accreted onto the Sundaland margin. This study evaluates the mineralogical characteristics and geochemistry of volcanic rocks from the Garba Formation in the Gilas River section to provide petrogenetic constraints on their origin. Mineral characterization was conducted using petrographic analysis under a polarizing microscope, whereas geochemical analysis was performed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Field observations reveal lava-related structures including autobreccia, platy joints, and pillow lava. Based on mineral proportions, the samples are classified as andesite, exhibiting porphyritic, glomerocrystic, trachytic, pilotaxitic, hyalopilitic, and intergranular textures. Geochemically, the volcanic rocks range from andesite to dacite and belong to the subalkaline medium-K calc-alkaline series. Tectonic discrimination diagrams indicate calc-alkaline basalt affinity associated with a continental arc setting. The observed rock structures, mineral assemblages, and textures indicate emplacement as lava flows. Moreover, the occurrence of pillow lava and quenched textures suggests lava–water interaction in a submarine environment consistent with inter-oceanic arc volcanism. However, the geochemical signatures suggest that the associated subduction system had evolved into a relatively mature continental arc prior to its accretion onto the Sundaland margin.
