Abstract

Background: Colon cancer is a gastrointestinal cancer with high morbidity and mortality rates, including in Indonesia. Despite the continued development of surgical and adjuvant therapies, colon tumor recurrence remains a clinical challenge, often requiring repeat surgery. Postoperative patients commonly experience incisional pain, anxiety, and sleep disturbances, which can hinder recovery. Therefore, simple non-pharmacological interventions are needed to support pain management, one of which is finger-holding relaxation therapy. Objective: To describe the implementation of perioperative nursing care using finger-holding relaxation therapy in patients with recurrent colon tumors undergoing laparotomy. Method: This study used a case study approach for Mrs. S, a 54-year-old female patient treated at the Central Surgical Unit of Labuang Baji Regional Hospital, Makassar. Nursing care was provided in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases, focusing on nursing diagnoses of acute pain, bleeding risk, and infection risk. Finger-holding relaxation therapy was performed by holding each finger for 3–5 minutes while regulating breathing, accompanied by ongoing education and monitoring. Results: The patient experienced a decrease in pain intensity from 7 to 6 on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), appeared calmer, experienced reduced anxiety, and demonstrated improved coping skills. No signs of bleeding or infection were observed during treatment, suggesting this therapy helped improve patient comfort. Conclusion: Finger-holding relaxation therapy has been shown to be effective, safe, and easy to implement as a non-pharmacological intervention to reduce pain and improve comfort in postoperative patients. This intervention is recommended in perioperative nursing practice to support patient recovery.
