Abstract

Poverty remains a structural challenge in Indonesia, particularly in rural areas of East Kotawaringin Regency, Central Kalimantan. The rapid growth of digital-based online gambling has increased socio-economic vulnerability among young people aged 15–24, especially students and out-of-school youth from low-income households with limited financial literacy. Data from the Central Kalimantan Financial Services Authority (OJK) show that the regional financial literacy index is only 32.73%, well below the national average, increasing exposure to risky financial behavior. This community service program offers a novel participatory approach by integrating Participatory Action Research (PAR) with Communication for Development (C4D). Unlike conventional one-way financial literacy initiatives, the program emphasizes youth empowerment and community-based communication. It is implemented as a six-month intervention in selected villages through three stages: participatory diagnosis, co-creation of financial literacy and online gambling prevention messages, and youth-led digital media campaigns. The program aims to support poverty alleviation by promoting behavioral change, financial resilience, and critical digital awareness among young people, while aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 1; SDG 4, and SDG 8) and Indonesia’s National Financial Inclusion Strategy. Strategic partners include the Financial Services Authority (OJK), youth organizations, and local schools. Program impacts are measured through pre–post surveys and focus group discussions, indicating improved financial literacy, increased awareness of online gambling risks, and strengthened youth participation in participatory digital communication. Outputs include digital learning modules, school-based training, and youth-produced educational content

Abstract

Cultural festivals play a vital role in promoting tourism and preserving heritage, but their sustainability and broader socio-economic impacts are not always well understood. This research aims to investigate the perceptions of stakeholders and tourists regarding the Isen Mulang Cultural Festival in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, to assess its demand and supply aspects and its potential for cultural and economic development. Qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with five stakeholders involved in the tourism sector, and their responses were content-analyzed and organized into a SWOT matrix. The study revealed the importance of enhancing security measures, providing additional accommodation options, and investing in festival promotion to attract more tourists and boost socio-economic benefits. The Isen Mulang Cultural Festival has the potential to contribute significantly to cultural and economic development in Central Kalimantan. However, addressing identified shortcomings and increasing government involvement are crucial steps to ensure its sustainable growth and appeal to international tourists.

Abstract

Religious diversity in Indonesia often presents challenges for local belief systems, including Hindu Kaharingan practiced by the Dayak community. Although integrated into the structure of Hinduism, its practices remain distinctive and deeply rooted in cultural values. Modernization and the rise of digital media have created a dilemma between preserving tradition and adapting to contemporary changes, making persuasive communication strategies essential for religious counseling to remain relevant, particularly for younger generations. This community service program employed the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach at Balai Basarah, Bantai Karau, East Barito Regency. The target groups included traditional leaders, religious counselors, youth, and Balai Basarah administrators. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, with triangulation applied to ensure validity. Findings reveal that Balai Basarah functions not only as a ritual space but also as a center for learning Kaharingan values. Persuasive communication strategies proved effective when integrating three key approaches: (1) psychodynamic, through the use of emotional narratives rooted in ancestral stories; (2) sociocultural, by reinforcing Dayak norms and cultural symbols; and (3) meaning construction, by simplifying messages supported with basic media such as leaflets and community-based online communication. Youth participation increased, particularly as the counseling was perceived to be more relevant and inclusive. This program demonstrates that tradition does not have to conflict with modernization, but can instead be strengthened through adaptive communication strategies grounded in local wisdom.
