Abstract

Students in the Generation Z era face increasingly severe psychosocial challenges due to the rapid development of digital technology and the moral degradation that follows. National survey data shows that one in three Indonesian teenagers has a mental health problem, while most Christian Gen Z do not have a spiritual mentor and feel distressed by worries about the future. In the midst of this reality, the PAK approach, which is still dominated by doctrinal knowledge transfer, is considered not able to accompany students comprehensively. This study aims to analyze Jesus' empathetic counseling approach in John 4:1-42 in an integrative manner, bringing together the perspectives of biblical theology and Rogers counseling psychology, in order to formulate a contextual and applicable mentoring model for PAK teachers. The method used is a literature study with a combination of thematic analysis and contextual biblical hermeneutic analysis. The results of the study show three main findings. First, Jesus' approach in John 4 is shown to be in harmony with Rogers' three conditions of effective counseling, empathy, unconditional acceptance, and congruence, forming a paradigm of companionship that is relevant throughout the ages. Second, Jesus' companionship principles have proven to be relevant to Gen Z's five key psychosocial needs, including unconditional acceptance, full presence, non-judgmental confrontation, transformative mentoring, and space to truly be heard. Third, this study formulates the Empathic Integrative Accompaniment Model (EIAM) as an original contribution that has never been formulated before in the academic literature of PAK Indonesia, consisting of five steps: full presence, empathy-based active listening, unconditional acceptance, empathic confrontation, and transformative mentoring. This model offers flexible guidance for PAK teachers to guide, explore potential, and accompany learners to become agents of change in their communities, while affirming the pedagogical relevance of biblical texts to today's educational challenges.

Abstract

This revised manuscript expands a reflective essay on the relationship between the Church, value politics, and the threat of national disintegration in contemporary Indonesia. The study addresses previous concerns regarding an underdeveloped methodology, repetitive rhetoric, and limited academic support by framing the article as a qualitative literature-based study with contextual theological analysis. This article argues that the Church is not called to function as an instrument of political legitimation but rather as a public conscience that maintains critical distance from all political powers. By examining the history of church-state relations, the dynamics of identity politics in Indonesia, and key works in Christian political ethics, the study proposes three practical orientations: deconstructing a defensive minority mentality, strengthening value politics based on justice and the common good, and transforming the Church into an inclusive public space that promotes interfaith dialogue and civic solidarity. The conceptual conclusion highlights that the Church’s response to polarization should not be characterized by apathy or pragmatic alignment with political elites, but through a disciplined, prophetic, and constructive witness in public life.

Abstract

Wayang kulit and the Suro month tradition are important expressions of Javanese culture that have not been widely examined as integrated resources for contextual Christian Religious Education (PAK) within the Javanese Christian Church (GKJ). This study investigates the theological and educational values contained in both cultural traditions, evaluates the relevance of Bevans' synthesis model and Groome's Shared Christian Praxis approach for contextual PAK, and formulates practical principles for an inculturation-based educational framework rooted in Javanese culture. The research applies a library research method using a cultural hermeneutics approach. Primary sources consist of theological works by Bevans and Groome together with scholarly literature on wayang kulit and the Suro tradition, while secondary sources include Sinta- and Scopus-indexed journal articles published between 2015 and 2025. Data were analyzed through content analysis and theological interpretation. The findings indicate that the values of dharma, welas asih, and resistance to evil represented in wayang kulit correspond closely with Christian teachings, whereas the Suro practices of tirakat and laku prihatin align with Christian concepts of repentance and spiritual renewal. Bevans' and Groome's frameworks effectively support this inculturation process when accompanied by sound theological discernment to prevent syncretism. The study proposes three guiding principles—resonance, transformation, and continuity—as practical foundations for implementing culturally rooted PAK in GKJ.
