Abstract

Nigeria continues to face complex socio-religious challenges, including sectarian conflicts, religious extremism, social fragmentation, and identity polarization. These problems reflect not only political and economic instability but also persistent challenges in religious interpretation. While the Qur’an promotes universal ethical values such as justice, tolerance, moderation, brotherhood, and peace, these principles are often obscured by rigid textualist readings that fail to engage contemporary social realities. This study examines the role of contextual tafsir in reactualizing Qur’anic values and explores its contribution to transforming religious consciousness and fostering social harmony in Nigeria. Employing a qualitative library research design, the study draws upon relevant Qur’anic verses, contemporary scholarship on contextual tafsir, and studies on Nigeria’s socio-religious conditions. Using a contextual interpretive framework, the analysis suggests that Qur’anic values can be reconstructed as practical ethical principles that encourage inclusive religiosity, interfaith engagement, social reconciliation, and resistance to extremist ideologies. The study further argues that contextual tafsir provides an important epistemological framework for connecting the universal message of the Qur’an with contemporary social challenges. This article contributes to contemporary Qur’anic studies by demonstrating the relevance of contextual interpretation in addressing socio-religious crises and promoting sustainable social harmony in contemporary Nigeria.
