Abstract

Surah Ar-Rahman is one of the most distinctive chapters in the Qur'an, characterized by the repetition of the verse فَبِأَيِّ آلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ exactly 31 times throughout the text. This phenomenon is not merely a stylistic feature but carries profound rhetorical dimensions and complex theological messages. This study aims to analyze the function of uslub tikrar (repetition style) and uslub istifham (interrogative style) in the said verse through two main approaches: balaghah (Arabic rhetoric) and thematic exegesis (tafsir mawdu'i). Previous studies have addressed tikrar only partially—through a single tafsir work—or have examined other rhetorical features such as tasybih and muqabalah without integrating them with tikrar analysis. This study fills that gap by presenting a combined analysis that maps the thematic context of all 31 repetitions and systematically analyzes the rhetorical functions of tikrar and istifham taqriri. The findings indicate that each repetition has a specific contextual relationship with the preceding theme, and from a rhetorical perspective, tikrar performs three main functions: cumulative taukid (emphasis), tanbih (awakening), and taqrir (consciousness-setting). The study also explores the contemporary relevance of the verse's message, particularly in relation to the problem of ingratitude and hedonic adaptation in modern life.
