Abstract

The low quality of science education in Indonesia is reflected in the results of the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the dominant use of conventional, teacher-centered learning models. This situation causes students to experience difficulties in understanding abstract science concepts, such as the solar system topic among sixth-grade students at SD PUI Cicurug. This study aims to determine the effect of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model on student learning outcomes regarding the solar system. The research method employed was quantitative with a quasi-experimental design, specifically utilizing the Nonequivalent Control Group Design approach. The research population involved all 30 sixth-grade students of SD PUI Cicurug, with the sample divided through simple random sampling into an experimental class (15 students) and a control class (15 students). Data collection instruments consisted of tests (pretest and posttest), observations, interviews, and documentation. Data were statistically analyzed using a paired sample t-test via the SPSS 27 application. The results showed that the initial ability of both classes was nearly balanced, with mean pretest scores of 65 for the experimental class and 66.3 for the control class. After the intervention, the mean posttest score of the experimental class surged ahead to 80, whereas the control class only reached 78.6. The t-test yielded a significance value of 0.005. In conclusion, this study validly proves that the Project-Based Learning model has a positive and significant effect, and is far more effective in improving student learning outcomes on the solar system topic compared to conventional methods.
