Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease with an increasing prevalence, both globally and nationally. Indonesia ranks fifth in the world with 19.5 million patients, while in Padang City there are 9,471 DM sufferers, the majority in the form of type II Diabetes Mellitus (DMT2). DM not only impacts morbidity, but also decreases the patient's quality of life. Improving self-care capabilities is an important strategy in glycemic control and prevention of long-term complications. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of self-care education on improving the knowledge of DM patients. The educational activity will be carried out in September 2025 with 30 participants aged 31–54 years. The implementation method includes the stages of preparation, counseling, and evaluation. Participants took part in the pre-test, received material presentations by two resource persons from STIKes Garuda Putih with student assistance, then took the post-test and Blood Sugar During (GDS) examination. The results showed a significant increase in respondents' knowledge, with the average pre-test score of 5.1 (SD=1.2) increasing to 8.17 (SD=1.23) at the post-test. This increase indicates that self-care education is effective in improving understanding of DM patients, even though most participants have limited basic education and access to health information. This structured education supports patients' self-care abilities, optimizes glycemic control, and has the potential to improve overall quality of life
