Abstract

Background: Surah Al-Hujurat is widely recognised as a foundational chapter of Islamic social ethics, yet many interpretations emphasise legal rulings rather than its underlying moral architecture. Objective: This study aims to construct a value-based exegesis that identifies the core ethical principles embedded in the surah as a framework for community formation. Method: Employing thematic and deductive textual analysis, the study systematically examines the verses by organising them into three relational dimensions: human interaction with divine authority, intra-community relations among believers, and engagement with broader humanity. Results: The findings demonstrate that the surah articulates a coherent ethical system grounded in respectful communication, the verification of information, conflict mediation, the protection of dignity, and the safeguarding of privacy. It further establishes piety as the sole criterion of human worth, transcending lineage, ethnicity, and social status. Conclusion: Surah Al-Hujurat offers a comprehensive and enduring moral blueprint for cultivating just and cohesive societies. Contribution: This study advances a structured model of value-based exegesis that enriches contemporary Islamic ethical theory and communal discourse.

Abstract

Background: Imam Al-Ghazzali (1058–1111 CE), known as "Hujjat al-Islam" (The Proof of Islam), emerged during an era of intense intellectual conflict between rationalist philosophy and religious faith. Despite his profound influence on Islamic thought, a comprehensive analysis of his integrated spiritual and ethical framework remains limited in contemporary scholarship. Objectives: This study examines Imam Al-Ghazzali's contributions to Sufism, analyzing his epistemological framework for spiritual knowledge, his ethical constitution rooted in Sufi psychology, his critique of philosophy, and his integration of Sharia compliance with spiritual purification. Methods: A qualitative historical-analytical research design was employed, utilizing content analysis of primary sources, including Al-Ghazzali's autobiographical Deliverance from Error, his magnum opus The Revival of the Religious Sciences, The Criterion of Action, and The Incoherence of the Philosophers. Results: The findings reveal that Al-Ghazzali established spiritual unveiling (kashf) as a valid source of certainty alongside reason and revelation, developed a comprehensive ethical framework based on refining the psychological powers of reason, desire, and anger, and demonstrated that authentic Sufism requires strict adherence to Islamic law. Conclusion: Al-Ghazzali's synthesis created an enduring framework uniting intellectual rigor with heartfelt devotion, offering a balanced approach to faith that continues to influence Islamic spirituality and ethics. Contributions: This research contributes to Islamic studies scholarship by providing a systematic analysis of Al-Ghazzali's integrated vision of Sufism and its contemporary relevance for discussions on reason, spirituality, and spiritual formation.

Abstract

Background: Arabic language instruction has increasingly adopted the integrated system known as Nazhāriyyah Al Wahdah, which conceptualises language as a unified communicative whole rather than separate linguistic components; however, its implementation in diverse higher education contexts remains insufficiently examined. Objective: This study aims to analyse the challenges and identify strategic solutions for applying Nazhāriyyah Al Wahdah at the undergraduate level in the Department of Arabic at The New College, Chennai, India. Method: Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis, and were analysed using an interactive analytical model. Result; The findings reveal that limited instructional time and the absence of a language laboratory significantly hinder effective skill integration, resulting in uneven student proficiency. While grammar (tarkib) and dialogue (hiwar) demonstrate relatively stronger engagement, listening (istima’), vocabulary application (mufradat), translation, and extended writing (kitabah) remain underdeveloped. Conclusion: Ssuccessful implementation requires institutional alignment, professional teacher competence, and the establishment of an immersive Arabic language environment (bi’ah lughawiyah). Contribution: The research contributes by clarifying the gap between structural and functional integration and by extending the discourse on integrated Arabic pedagogy to a non-Indonesian context.
