Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of digital fatigue in the teaching profession by examining the influence of workload and technostress on teacher performance through work-family conflict and burnout as mediating variables.   Design/methodology/approach – This study employed a quantitative approach with an explanatory research design. The population consisted of 38 senior high school and vocational high school teachers in Kebomas District, Gresik. Because the population was relatively small, saturated sampling was applied, involving all teachers as respondents. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling based on Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). Finding/Results – The results revealed that workload had a significant negative effect on teacher performance (β = -0.231; p = 0.005), while technostress also had a significant negative effect on teacher performance (β = -0.267; p = 0.002). Furthermore, workload significantly increased work-family conflict (β = 0.421; p < 0.001), and technostress also significantly increased work-family conflict (β = 0.398; p < 0.001). Work-family conflict had a significant positive effect on burnout (β = 0.512; p < 0.001), whereas burnout had a significant negative effect on teacher performance (β = -0.478; p < 0.001). Mediation analysis indicated that work-family conflict and burnout acted as significant mediators. Originality/Value – This study contributes to the literature by developing and empirically testing an integrated model that explains how digital work demands affect teacher performance through sequential psychological processes involving work-family conflict and burnout. The findings extend the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) Theory by demonstrating the interconnected roles of work-family conflict and burnout as serial mediators.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the increasing complexity of public sector organizations in the era of digital transformation, which has intensified employee workloads and raised demands for organizational performance. Differences in employment status among Civil Servants (PNS), Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPPK/P3K), and honorary employees have created disparities in job security, compensation, and welfare, while employees are still expected to achieve similar performance targets. Therefore, this study aims to examine employee performance from a well-being perspective by analyzing the effect of Job Insecurity, Work Motivation, Organizational Commitment, and Compensation on Employee Performance through the mediating role of Job Satisfaction. This study employed a quantitative explanatory research design conducted at the Tourism, Creative Economy, Culture, and Youth and Sports Agency of Gresik Regency. Data were collected from 152 employees consisting of PNS, PPPK/P3K, and honorary employees using structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS). The findings revealed that Job Insecurity negatively and significantly affected Job Satisfaction and Employee Performance, while Work Motivation, Organizational Commitment, and Compensation positively and significantly influenced Job Satisfaction and Employee Performance. Job Satisfaction was also proven to significantly mediate the relationship between the independent variables and Employee Performance. This study contributes theoretically by developing a comprehensive well-being-based employee performance model in the public sector and practically by providing strategic recommendations for improving employee welfare and sustainable organizational performance.

Abstract

This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the dynamics, challenges, and strategic efforts to improve the quality of Muhammadiyah education in the current era of disruption. The analysis focuses on a critical review of the implementation of the Al-Islam, Kemuhammadiyahan, and Arabic Language Curriculum (ISMUBA) as well as the factors shaping teacher professionalism. Since its establishment in 1912, Muhammadiyah has served as both an Islamic movement and an educational institution committed to reforming Islamic education in Indonesia by integrating religious knowledge with modern scientific disciplines, thereby cultivating ulama-intellectuals and intellectual-ulama. The study employs a qualitative literature review design by analyzing 20 PDF documents, consisting of official Muhammadiyah publications and peerreviewed journal articles. The analysis is further reinforced through descriptive correlational techniques to examine teacher professionalism data and is synthesized using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The findings indicate that teaching experience has a positive and statistically significant effect on teacher professionalism, whereas educational attainment and training programs have yet to demonstrate significant influence. Revitalization strategies identified in this study include strengthening institutional networks, advancing global expansion, developing technology-driven educational programs (such as Muhammadiyah Online University), and revitalizing ISMUBA/AIK as a foundation for ideological strengthening and cadre development. In conclusion, the study argues that Muhammadiyah education possesses substantial potential to excel in the disruptive era, provided that the organization’s reformist spirit (tajdid) is holistically integrated into curriculum development, learning methodologies, and teacher professionalism enhancement efforts.
