Abstract

The oil and gas drilling industry is widely recognized as a high-risk sector in terms of occupational safety and health (OSH). Workers in this field are frequently exposed to a range of physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards, which significantly increase their vulnerability to various occupational diseases (ODs). These include, but are not limited to, respiratory disorders, musculoskeletal injuries, and dermatological conditions. Given the complex and hazardous nature of drilling operations, implementation a comprehensive and systematic OSH management system has become essential. This review article aims to synthesize recent literature examining the relationship between the application of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) systems and the prevention of occupational diseases among drilling rig workers. A thorough evaluation of both national and international studies published in the last five years reveals that effective implementation plays a critical role in reducing the incidence of ODs. The findings consistently highlight that the most significant improvements are achieved through proactive risk control measures, ongoing worker training programs, and continuous environmental monitoring. These strategies, when integrated into daily operations, contribute to creating a safer work environment, thereby enhancing both worker well-being and overall operational efficiency in high-risk industries such as oil and gas drilling.

Abstract

This article presents a systematic review of the implementation of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) systems in oil and gas drilling operations, with a particular focus on risk control strategies. The high-risk nature of drilling activities demands a proactive and comprehensive approach to managing safety hazards, which include toxic gas exposure, high-pressure fluid systems, and harsh working environments. Drawing upon studies published between 2018 and 2024, the review evaluates the effectiveness of international standards such as ISO 45001, Indonesia’s SMK3, and OSHA's Process Safety Management in mitigating workplace accidents. Key findings indicate that structured application of these systems, supported by top management commitment, continuous training, and active worker participation, significantly reduces accident rates. The review also highlights the importance of the hierarchy of controls and the integration of Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring technologies in enhancing real-time hazard detection. However, several implementation challenges persist, including inconsistent procedural adherence, insufficient competency-based training, and weak reporting cultures. To address these issues, the study recommends regular evaluations, external audits, and strengthened safety culture initiatives. Overall, this review contributes to a deeper understanding of OHS performance in high-risk drilling environments and provides evidence-based recommendations to improve workplace safety and operational sustainability in the oil and gas sector.

Abstract

Industrial building construction activities are widely regarded as high-risk operations due to the complexity of tasks and the involvement of various hazardous elements. Workers are frequently exposed to dangers such as falling from heights, being struck by moving or falling objects, electrical hazards, exposure to toxic substances, and musculoskeletal strains. These risks necessitate a systematic and comprehensive approach to hazard identification and risk control to ensure worker safety and operational continuity. This review article aims to synthesize relevant scientific literature published between 2018 and 2024 from reputable databases such as Scopus and Sinta, focusing on the identification of workplace hazards, methods of risk analysis, and implementation of effective mitigation strategies. The narrative review method was employed to gather and analyze findings from 28 selected studies that met predefined inclusion criteria. Results indicate that structured risk assessment tools—such as Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Determining Control (HIRADC), Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and bowtie analysis—combined with the application of ISO 45001-based Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS), contribute significantly to minimizing accident rates. The review emphasizes the importance of integrating technical measures, administrative controls, and continuous safety training to develop a resilient and safety-oriented work culture in the industrial construction sector.
