Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to synthesize empirical evidence regarding the effectiveness, attitudes, and experiences of university students toward e-counseling services. A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Literature searches were carried out in Scopus, SAGE, ScienceDirect, and SpringerLink databases for articles published between 2020 and 2025. A total of 14 studies that met the inclusion criteria were analyzed using narrative synthesis. The findings indicate that e-counseling is effective in reducing anxiety, stress, depression, and psychological distress, while enhancing students’ psychological well-being. Students generally demonstrate positive attitudes toward e-counseling, influenced by accessibility, flexibility, time efficiency, and anonymity. Some students still prefer face-to-face counseling due to stronger perceived therapeutic relationships. Students’ experiences reveal that e-counseling provides emotional support, a sense of safety, and comfort in disclosing personal issues, although challenges remain, including technical difficulties, limited nonverbal communication, and stigma associated with help-seeking behavior. The findings suggest that e-counseling is an effective digital intervention for supporting university students’ mental health in the digital era.
