Abstract

Wealth inequality has reached a historic high in American history, particularly among households with children. Children's literature portrays these economic disparities, often evoking strong emotions in young readers. Society has a responsibility to expose children to literature that teaches them to value diverse human experiences. This study investigated how children's literary fiction depicts scenarios of wealth inequality. Using critical literacy theory, we examined the extent to which characters and their circumstances are represented through a deficit or an asset lens. This study provides insights into children's books addressing issues of wealth inequality and offers recommendations for teachers navigating discussions of wealth inequality in children's literature.
