Abstract

Background: Labor pain during the first stage of labor is a physiological condition caused by uterine contractions, cervical dilation, and fetal head descent. Inadequate pain management may increase anxiety, stress, fatigue, and prolong the labor process. One non-pharmacological approach to reducing labor pain is the combination of deep breathing relaxation and lavender aromatherapy. Deep breathing relaxation helps relieve muscle tension and promotes physical relaxation, while lavender aromatherapy stimulates the limbic system to produce a calming effect and reduce pain perception. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of combining deep breathing relaxation with lavender aromatherapy on reducing first-stage labor pain at the Ampelgading Community Health Center, Malang Regency. Methods: A quantitative study with a comparative design was conducted involving 30 women in the first stage of labor, consisting of 15 participants in the intervention group and 15 in the control group selected through total sampling. Data were collected using observation sheets and labor pain questionnaires and analyzed with the Mann–Whitney test. Results: All respondents (100%) in the intervention group experienced mild pain after receiving the combined intervention, whereas most respondents in the control group continued to experience moderate pain. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference between the two groups (Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000; p < 0.05). Conclusion: The combination of deep breathing relaxation and lavender aromatherapy is effective in reducing pain during the first stage of labor and may serve as a safe, simple, and effective non-pharmacological intervention for labor pain management.
