Abstract

This article examines free dating practices among young students and the increasing trend of premarital pregnancy in East Java through a thematic Qur’anic interpretation from the perspective of sadd al-dzarî‘ah. This issue is significant because uncontrolled dating, social media exposure, weak parental supervision, and permissive youth interaction contribute to the rise of marriage dispensation, early marriage, young divorce, and social vulnerability, particularly among female students. The article places QS. al-Furqân/25: 27–28, QS. al-Nûr/24: 2, and QS. al-Mâ’idah/5: 2 as key verses for analyzing social interaction, the prohibition of zina, and the urgency of collective solidarity in preventing moral harm. Using the framework of sadd al-dzarî‘ah, this study argues that prevention must begin by closing the pathways that may lead to prohibited acts, such as uncontrolled romantic relationships, pornographic content consumption, permissive digital communication, and weakened family functions. The findings indicate that preventing premarital pregnancy cannot rely solely on moral advice; it requires cooperation among families, schools, communities, government institutions, and social media platforms. This article concludes that the Qur’an provides an ethical-preventive framework to protect young students from free lifestyles and to build a safer, more educational, and dignified social environment.
