Abstract

This study examines the evolution of Qur’anic exegesis methodologies in the Nusantara through an intellectual genealogy approach based on a review of previous scholarly studies. The research focuses on tracing patterns of transmission and methodological transformation in Qur’anic interpretation from the classical period represented by ‘Abd al-Ra’?f al-Sinkil? to contemporary and digital exegesis. The data are derived from a critical analysis of academic journals, scholarly books, and previous research that discuss Qur’anic commentaries and Indonesian exegetes across historical periods. The findings indicate that Nusantara tafsir developed through a continuous engagement with classical Islamic traditions while simultaneously undergoing significant contextual adaptation in response to socio-historical, cultural, and political changes. These transformations are reflected in shifts in language use, interpretive media, and exegetical approaches, ranging from vernacularization in local languages and the nationalization of Indonesian to rationalized interpretations and digital dissemination. This study concludes that Nusantara tafsir should not be understood as a passive replication of Middle Eastern traditions, but rather as a dynamic and autonomous discursive tradition that maintains Islamic scholarly authority while addressing the evolving needs of Indonesian Muslim society.
