Abstract

Labor pain is a physiological condition experienced by almost all women during childbirth. Managing labor pain is a fundamental goal of intrapartum care, and non-pharmacological approaches-such as acupressure-are utilized for this purpose. Acupressure is a simple, side-effect-free, non-pharmacological method that can serve as an alternative for reducing labor pain. Research Objective: To determine the effect of acupressure on reducing the intensity of labor pain during the first stage of labor. This study employed a literature review method; the article selection process followed the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, comprising four stages: identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and inclusion. Articles were obtained by searching the Google Scholar database using a combination of keywords: acupressure, pain, and first-stage labor. Subsequently, duplicate articles were removed, screening was conducted based on titles and abstracts, and eligibility was assessed through full-text review. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria were then evaluated for methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist. Articles that passed the quality assessment were included in the final synthesis to analyze the effect of acupressure techniques on reducing labor pain intensity during the first stage of labor. Based on the literature review results, it can be concluded that acupressure techniques are effective in reducing the intensity of labor pain during the first stage of labor.

Abstract

Labor pain arises from uterine contractions that push the baby's head, causing cervical dilation and effacement. If not managed effectively, labor pain can lead to complications such as prolonged labor. One therapeutic intervention for first-stage labor pain is the use of a birth ball-an inflatable rubber ball designed to help reduce labor pain. Research Objective: To examine the application of birth balls regarding pain intensity during the first stage of labor. This study employed a literature review method; the article selection process followed PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines, comprising four stages: identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and inclusion. Articles were obtained by searching the Google Scholar database using the keywords "birth ball," "pain," and "labor." Subsequently, duplicate articles were removed, screening was conducted based on titles and abstracts, and eligibility was assessed through full-text review. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria were then evaluated for methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist. Articles that passed the quality assessment were included in the final synthesis to analyze the effect of birth ball use on reducing pain intensity during the first stage of labor. Based on the literature review results, it can be concluded that birth balls are effective in reducing pain intensity during the first stage of labor.

Abstract

Back pain is a common complaint among third-trimester pregnant women, resulting from changes in posture and hormones, as well as the increased physical load of pregnancy. This condition can diminish a mother's quality of life and comfort as she approaches childbirth. Endorphin massage-a gentle touch technique that stimulates the release of natural analgesic hormones-is a complementary therapy method used to alleviate back pain. This study aimed to analyze and review literature regarding endorphin massage as a complementary therapy for back pain in third-trimester pregnant women. A literature review method was employed, with the article selection process following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines; this process comprised four stages: identification, screening, eligibility assessment, and inclusion. Articles were sourced from the Google Scholar database using a combination of the keywords "endorphin massage," "back pain," and "third trimester." Subsequent steps involved removing duplicates, screening based on titles and abstracts, and assessing eligibility through full-text review. Articles meeting the inclusion criteria were then evaluated for methodological quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist. Articles that passed the quality assessment were included in the final synthesis to analyze the role of endorphin massage as a complementary therapy for back pain in third-trimester pregnant women. Based on the literature review findings, it can be concluded that endorphin massage is effective in reducing back pain among pregnant women in their third trimester.
