Abstract

Language education serves as a strategic instrument in shaping cultural and national identity, particularly in multi-ethnic nations such as Indonesia and Malaysia. Utilizing a qualitative approach based on literature review, this article analyzes the contribution of language education to the construction of cultural identity in both countries. The theoretical framework encompasses Language Policy and Planning (Spolsky, 2004) and Language Ideology (Woolard, 1998). Findings indicate that Indonesia develops an integrative-pluralist model through the assertion of Bahasa Indonesia as a national unifier, while Malaysia implements an ethno-national orientation in language education with Bahasa Melayu as a symbol of majority identity. Despite sharing Malay linguistic roots, historical politics and social dynamics have shaped ideological differences in language education. This study also identifies research gaps in comparative language education policy studies that integrate globalization dynamics and multilingual realities within the ASEAN context. The article contributes to understanding how postcolonial nations navigate the tension between national unity, ethnic diversity, and global competitiveness through language education policies.

Abstract

This research was designed to establish of enhancing for students’ oral communication skills were developed by intensifying English usage in class. In this research, a pre experimental design involving one group with pre test and post test was used, and speaking tests were administered to collect the data. The sample of this research consisted of students in first semester at STIKES Al Fatah Bengkulu that involved a total of 36 students. A comparative technique was employed to examine and compare student’s scores prior to and following the speaking activity. The findings of the research showed that students’ speaking proficiency in vocabulary from 2.5 increased to 3.84 with improvement was 53.2% and the students’ speaking competence in pronunciation from 2.33 increased to 3.75% with improvement was 60.94% by totally mean score was 57.07%. Moreover, for speaking competence was effective with the result of the statistical analysis using t-test value and t-table value was proved 20.92>2.030. It meant that t-test value was higher than t-table value. It can be concluded that pharmacy students got a positive impact and feasible method for applied by using an intensifying English learning strategy of students in first semester at STIKES Al Fatah.

Abstract

The increasing complexity and volume of medical record documentation demand students to read efficiently and accurately. However, conventional learning approaches often do not adequately support the development of effective reading strategies aligned with professional needs. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of integrating speed reading strategies within the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model to improve reading speed among medical record students. This study employed a quasi-experimental design involving 60 second-year medical record students at STIKES Sapta Bakti Bengkulu. The intervention was conducted over six weeks by embedding speed reading techniques into the stages of the PBL learning process. Students’ reading performance was assessed using pre-test and post-test measurements of reading speed. The data were analyzed using comparative statistical analysis to determine the effectiveness of the intervention. The results showed a significant improvement in students’ reading speed after the implementation of PBL-based speed reading activities. The average reading speed increased from 150 words per minute (wpm) in the pre-test to 250 wpm in the post-test, with the difference being statistically significant (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the integration of speed reading strategies within a problem-based learning environment effectively enhances students’ ability to process medical record texts more efficiently. In conclusion, integrating speed reading strategies into the Problem-Based Learning model is effective in improving reading speed among medical record students. This approach provides a relevant instructional strategy that supports the cognitive demands of medical record analysis and contributes to the development of effective learning practices in medical record education.
