Abstract

The Makassar City Islands, particularly the Spermonde Archipelago, rely heavily on marine transportation to support tourism activities. The increasing number of tourist visits has not been accompanied by adequate safety literacy, as reflected in the limited understanding of boat operators and tourists regarding maritime safety procedures, the inconsistent use of safety equipment, and the lack of continuous safety education. This community service program aimed to strengthen maritime tourism transportation safety literacy through a participatory educational approach integrating conceptual learning, interactive discussions, and practical safety simulations. The program involved 57 participants consisting of boat operators, tourism awareness groups, domestic tourists, and local government representatives. Program effectiveness was evaluated using pre-tests, post-tests, observations, and participant feedback. The findings revealed a 50% increase in participants' knowledge of maritime safety principles, safety equipment utilization, and emergency response procedures. Observations also indicated improvements in participants' practical skills, safety awareness, and engagement throughout the learning process. Beyond enhancing individual capacity, the program fostered stakeholder collaboration to support the development of a sustainable safety culture in marine tourism transportation across the Makassar City Islands.

Abstract

The rapid growth of motorized vehicles in urban areas poses significant challenges to transportation safety and the overall comfort of public mobility. Makassar City, as one of Indonesia’s major metropolitan areas, faces an increasing risk of traffic accidents due to road congestion, unsafe user behavior, and limited pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly infrastructure. This community service program aims to enhance public awareness and understanding of transportation safety principles through participatory community-based socialization. The implementation methods include field surveys, development of educational materials, interactive workshops, simulation of proper traffic facility use, and evaluation of participants’ knowledge through pre- and post-tests. The activities were conducted at several strategic locations in Makassar City and involved one hundred participants from diverse backgrounds. The results indicate a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge and safe behavior, both as drivers and pedestrians, after attending the program. The community showed greater awareness of using pedestrian crossings, safety equipment, and traffic ethics. This initiative has proven effective in fostering a culture of safety in urban environments and represents an important step toward achieving a safer, more inclusive, and mobility-friendly city for all road users.
