Abstract

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) has gained increasing attention as a strategy to enhance agricultural productivity and resilience under changing climatic conditions. However, empirical evidence on whether CSA adoption improves the technical efficiency of farm production remains limited, particularly in developing countries. This study determined the technical efficiency of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices in crop production in the North Central of Vietnam by comparing CSA adopters and non-adopters (traditional farms). Using cross-sectional data from 302 farm households, this study employed the stochastic production frontier, combined with a propensity score matching approach, to correct the sample selection bias. The findings disclosed that the average estimate of the technical efficiency level of the corrected sample selection reached 80.33 percent. CSA farming practices were technically more efficient than traditional farming practices in both stochastic production frontier models, conventional and sample selection. This study recommends that authorities provide more training on CSA practices to farmers, enhancing their knowledge and encouraging adoption. In addition, boosting the assistance from extension services and credit access related to CSA adoption has become necessary to encourage farmers to adopt and improve the technical efficiency of farm production.
