Abstract

This study tested the effectiveness of an innovative combination of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and Powtoon in improving the interest and learning outcomes of eleventh-grade high school students in thermochemistry. A quasi-experimental method with a nonequivalent control group showed a significant increase in learning interest (N-Gain 55.4%) and learning outcomes (N-Gain 77.7%) in the experimental class, with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05) compared to the control class. The PBL-Powtoon combination proved effective in overcoming the difficulties of abstract and teacher-centered thermochemistry learning, while offering a more interactive and student-centered learning approach. These findings provide an important contribution to the development of technology-based chemistry learning media, particularly for improving understanding of complex concepts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the differences in learning outcomes, improvement in learning outcomes, and the effectiveness of the discovery learning model assisted by the Virtual Laboratory OLabs on acid-base material. The study used a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The study sample consisted of two classes of XI MAN 2 Model Medan, namely XI F1-A and XI F1-G. The experimental class applied the discovery learning model and the control class used the direct learning model. Both classes used the same media, namely the Virtual Laboratory OLabs, so that differences in learning outcomes were reviewed based on the applied learning model. Data were collected using a validated multiple-choice test. The results showed that the average post-test score of the experimental class (87.12) was higher than the control class (82.78). The improvement in learning outcomes in the experimental class was also better with an average N-Gain value of 0.74 (high category), while the control class obtained an N-Gain of 0.61 (medium category). The results of the hypothesis test showed a significance value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in learning outcomes between the two groups. Thus, the discovery learning model assisted by the Virtual Laboratory OLabs is more effective than the direct learning model in improving student learning outcomes in acid-base material.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of discovery learning model assisted by PhET simulation media on students' motivation and learning outcomes in acid-base material, and to determine the correlation between the two variables. The study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental type and a pretest–posttest control group design. The study sample consisted of two grades of eleventh grade at SMA Negeri 1 Percut Sei Tuan which were selected randomly, namely the experimental class and the control class. The research instruments were a learning outcome test and a learning motivation questionnaire. The results showed that the increase in students' learning motivation in the experimental class was in the high category (N-Gain = 0.78), while the control class was in the medium category (N-Gain = 0.48). The increase in students' learning outcomes in the experimental class was also higher (N-Gain = 0.79) than the control class (N-Gain = 0.54). The results of the hypothesis test showed that there was a significant difference in motivation and learning outcomes between the experimental class and the control class (sig. <0.05). In addition, there was a positive and significant correlation between learning motivation and learning outcomes with a correlation coefficient of 0.577 which was included in the medium category. Based on the research results, the discovery learning model assisted by PhET simulation significantly improved student motivation and learning outcomes in acid-base topics.

Abstract

This study aims to develop teaching materials on reaction rates based on the STEM-Problem Based Learning (STEM-PBL) approach and to assess their validity and practicality, ensuring they are suitable for use in a basic chemistry course. The study employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the Plomp model, which encompasses the stages of preliminary investigation, design, product development, evaluation, and revision. The research involved three expert validators and 30 students from the Chemistry Education Study Program. Data collection instruments included validation sheets and practicality questionnaires. Validation results indicated that the teaching materials fell into the "highly valid" category, with average scores of 90 for content, 90.8 for language, and 88.3 for graphics. Practicality test results showed that the developed materials were "highly practical," achieving scores of 87 for ease of use, 88.5 for presentation appeal, and 90.5 for usefulness. The findings demonstrate that the STEM-PBL-based reaction rate teaching materials meet the criteria for high validity and practicality, making them suitable as learning resources for basic chemistry courses. This study was limited to assessing the product's validity and practicality.
