Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the main food crops in Indonesia whose productivity is often reduced due to pest attacks, particularly rice bugs (Leptocorisa oratorius). Pest control is generally carried out using synthetic pesticides which may cause negative environmental impacts. Therefore, environmentally friendly alternatives such as botanical pesticides are needed. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of tobacco extract in controlling rice bugs under in vitro conditions. The study was conducted at the Integrated Laboratory of the Agrotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Pasir Pengaraian, from August to September 2025. A Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with one factor was used consisting of four treatments: K0 = 0%, K1 = 10%, K2 = 20%, and K3 = 30% tobacco extract. Observed parameters included mortality, mortality rate, and feeding inhibition of rice bugs. The results showed that tobacco extract significantly affected all observed parameters. The best treatment was obtained at 30% concentration (K3), resulting in 74.44% mortality, 0.74 insects/hour mortality rate, and 63.48% feeding inhibition. Increasing tobacco extract concentration increased mortality, mortality rate, and feeding inhibition of rice bugs. Tobacco extract has potential as an effective and environmentally friendly botanical pesticide for controlling rice bug pests in rice cultivation. Keywords: Botanical pesticide, mortality, tobacco extract.
