Abstract

ABSTRACT Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability and often results in critical conditions that require intensive care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Local data on the characteristics of stroke patients treated in the ICU at Ibnu Sina YW-UMI Hospital is still limited. The objective of this study was to describe the characteristics of stroke patients treated in the ICU at Ibnu Sina YW-UMI Hospital during the period 2023–2024. This study used a quantitative observational descriptive method with a retrospective approach using secondary medical record data. The data included age, gender, ethnicity, body mass index (BMI), history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, family history, atrial fibrillation, and type of stroke. The analysis was performed univariately and presented as frequency distribution and percentages. The results showed that of the 30 patients, the largest age groups were early elderly (33.3%) and late elderly (26.7%); 60,0 % of patients were male. A history of hypertension was found in 96.7% of patients, diabetes in 20%, dyslipidemia in 93.3%, and family history in 3.3%. The proportion of hemorrhagic and non-hemorrhagic strokes was equal (50% each). The majority came from the Makassar tribe (70%). BMI data are not available on 70% of medical records. The conclusion of this study is that ICU stroke patients are dominated by the elderly, men, with comorbid hypertension and dyslipidemia, it is necessary to strengthen prevention and clinical record.
