Abstract

Vertigo is characterized by a false sensation of movement and may be accompanied by dizziness, headache, nausea, imbalance, and reduced ability to perform daily activities. Brandt–Daroff exercises are repeated positional movements intended to promote vestibular habituation and can be practiced independently after appropriate instruction. This literature review evaluated the effect of Brandt–Daroff therapy on vertigo symptoms and acute pain. Google Scholar was used because it provides broad access to Indonesian nursing journals and institutional full-text publications. Experimental and quasi-experimental studies published from 2021 to 2025 were screened using predefined eligibility and quality criteria. Of 151 records identified, six studies involving 136 participants were included. The studies used the Dizziness Handicap Inventory, Vertigo Symptom Scale–Short Form, Visual Vertigo Analogue Scale, and Numeric Rating Scale. All studies reported statistically significant improvement in dizziness, vertigo severity, functional impact, or pain after Brandt–Daroff-based interventions. However, three studies combined the exercise with music or aromatherapy, making it difficult to isolate the independent effect of Brandt–Daroff therapy. Protocol reporting was also inconsistent regarding session frequency, duration, and repetitions. Brandt–Daroff exercises may be useful as a complementary nursing intervention for appropriately selected patients, but the current evidence does not support describing all reported improvements solely as acute-pain reduction. Standardized controlled trials are required.
