Abstract

Christianity originated in Jewish territory and was initially regarded as an illegal religion when it expanded across the Roman Empire; however, its legalization under Emperor Constantine facilitated its increasing involvement in political affairs. Although the sixteenth-century Reformation led by Martin Luther was primarily religious in orientation, its adoption by King Henry VIII of England transformed it into a broader religio-political movement. John Calvin further extended the Reformation’s political significance by criticizing practices within the Roman Catholic Church and emphasizing principles of good governance, particularly through Institutes of the Christian Religion, which articulated ideas concerning just civil government that contributed to the development of modern democratic thought. This study examines the influence of religion on politics by analyzing the Reformation movement in Western Europe and its subsequent role in shaping modern democracy. It also addresses the limited political participation of some eligible Christian citizens in Nigeria, a condition that may contribute to the persistence of poor governance. The study employed a qualitative library research design based on secondary sources, including books, journal articles, magazines, newspapers, edited volumes, and relevant online documents. The analysis indicates that the Reformation evolved beyond a religious movement and became an important political force that influenced ideas of governance, civic responsibility, and democracy. The study concludes that Christian political participation, when guided by Christian ethical principles, can contribute to improved governance and democratic development in Nigeria. It therefore recommends greater and more responsible involvement of Nigerian Christians in political processes to support the societal change they seek.

Abstract

Religion continues to play a significant role in contemporary democratic politics, particularly in religiously plural societies where electoral behavior is often shaped by faith-based identities and appeals. This study examined the influence of religion in the 2023 Nigerian and 2024 United States presidential elections, with particular attention to how selected candidates deployed what this study terms “religio-political strategies” during their campaigns to attract electoral support. Using a qualitative research approach, the study drew on both primary and secondary sources of data, including observation, books, journal articles, newspapers, magazines, previous project materials, and internet documentary reports relevant to the elections under review. The findings indicate that religion remained an influential factor in both electoral contexts, as candidates such as Peter Obi and Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Nigeria and Donald Trump in the United States employed religiously inflected campaign strategies to appeal to the electorate. These strategies generated substantial support for their presidential bids, and some of the candidates who adopted them secured electoral victory. The study concludes that religion continues to shape modern political processes and remains highly relevant to electoral mobilization in democratic societies. It contributes to the growing discourse on religion and politics by demonstrating how religio-political strategies can influence voter alignment and election outcomes in pluralistic states, while implying the need for more critical engagement with the intersection of faith and democratic participation, particularly in Nigeria.

Abstract

Nigeria’s religious and ethnic diversity makes social cohesion essential to peaceful coexistence and national development. Despite the ideals of “Peace and Unity” embodied in Nigeria’s Coat of Arms, recurrent ethno-religious crises have resulted in loss of life, property destruction, and persistent insecurity, demonstrating that these national aspirations remain insufficiently realized. This study examines how human relations officers can contribute to building social cohesion among Nigeria’s diverse communities through their professional roles and functions. Data were obtained from primary sources, including observations and oral interviews, and secondary sources, including newspapers, magazines, textbooks, scholarly books, edited volumes, and journal articles. The findings indicate that human relations officers can promote social cohesion by educating, counseling, and mediating among citizens, thereby strengthening awareness of the importance of harmonious coexistence across ethnic and religious divisions. The study concludes that effective human relations practices are integral to social integration, peace, and national unity in pluralistic Nigeria. It contributes a human relations perspective to social cohesion discourse and underscores the practical importance of educational, counseling, and mediation interventions in reducing social divisions and supporting sustainable national development.
