Abstract

This research analyzes the impact of social dynamics on the practice of the massolo tradition, which involves exchanging materials as an act of reciprocity. This research analyzes the impact of social dynamics on the practice of the massolo tradition, which involves exchanging materials as an act of reciprocity. The study aims to examine the changes caused by this tradition in various aspects, including social, economic, cultural, and community welfare. The study employed an ethnographic method using a qualitative descriptive approach. The data was collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with various stakeholders, including the community, traditional leaders, and the government of Bonto Baji Village, Kajang District, Bulukumba Regency. The findings indicate that the socio-economic dynamics of the Massolo tradition have led to significant changes in cultural values and social structures. The shift from solidarity to focus results in social inequality and conflict. The high financial burden, specifically the exorbitant nominal passolo, makes repayment difficult and leads to debt. The massolo tradition is viewed as an investment. Changes in social norms affect social relations and the community's economy. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen management of the impact to maintain a balance between cultural, social, and economic aspects. This research aims to develop practical solutions to the social and economic challenges faced by the community.
