Abstract

Background. The social conflict in Poso has left a profound imprint on the collective memory of local communities. Objective. This study examines how collective memory is formed and transmitted and how it shapes social dynamics in the post-conflict period. Method. Drawing on the anthropology of memory, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and a literature review. The study explores how individuals and communities manage traumatic experiences, pursue reconciliation, and sustain social harmony. Results. The findings show that collective memory plays a complex role in shaping social relations in Bancea Village. Trauma and distrust remain present in several aspects of community life; however, local values such as Sintuwu Maroso have become central instruments for rebuilding solidarity across social and religious groups. Although some residents prefer not to revisit the conflict in order to preserve stability, others regard remembering as essential to preventing similar violence from recurring. The study highlights the importance of community-based approaches to post-conflict reconciliation and the need for policies oriented toward social and economic recovery. It demonstrates that conflict-affected communities can rebuild everyday life through the interaction of memory, culture, local values, and reconciliation.
